Today is a big day. A REALLY big day. It’s a little nerve wracking yet exciting… because I finally have something to offer that I’ve been asked about for a long, LONG time.

Deeeep breath…;

12 Days of Christmas 2013 via Funky Junk Interiors-012Do you remember my trip to Toronto where I met Jennylyn Pringle of Homestead House, Fusion Mineral Paint and Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint?

After we chatted abit, we shared each other’s dreams. And here was mine…

“I’d love to offer a line of old sign stencils, because every time I make signs, I receive requests on where to buy. I think stencils are the way to go, so anyone can make a nice looking old sign, without any fancy equipment.”

And that’s when Jennylyn’s eyes widened, and said, “WE DO THAT!”

Jaw drop.

Yes. It’s real! It’s really really real! 🙂

I kinda slowed down on making signs, because it was frustrating.

I’ve made signs for a LONG time, and had planned to write an ebook, sharing my 20 year sign making experience. And that may still happen. But that still didn’t fix what was currently broke.

But I was itchin’ for a couple of new ones for Christmas, so with this new stencil option, no hold barred!

You saw a peek at this new coffee sign design on my hot cocoa station HERE.

And here is what I came up with.

You Cut Tree Farm. This was designed to be placed at the foot of my stairway for keys, Christmas cards and the odd coat.

I went very distressed this round. I wanted that thing to look like it was found by a fluke! 🙂

The tree was first drawn perfectly, but then I added curves and shakes to it. Same with the star, so it has a hand drawn element to it.

So here’s how I did it…

How I did it:

  • Attach a long board to a triangle shaped board (I used a shingle) with a couple of old relic hinges.
  • Stencil the main board with chosen design.
  • Lightly distress with a palm sander.
  • Coat with a wax or oil for wood. (I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil)
  • Hang it up!

Miss Skye was in charge of… looking cute. A+!

I had an old board that was about the right size. I just lightly sanded it.

Then an old shingle became the arrow tip. I cut the shape with a jig saw, then attached the arrow head to the board with a couple of old hinges I landed in this pile of junk.

Rather than traditional hooks (because I didn’t have any!), I then decided rusty S hooks were just different and quirky enough to work.

So I installed two wood slices behind the sign so the board would protrude a little from the wall. Hack fest at its best!

After mulling over what the sign should actually do, I decided it flat out needed lettering.

And the result was a really old looking Christmas tree arrow sign with that can do virtually anything!

Hang Christmas cards, keys, coat hook, coffee cup hanger, or just something fun to help chime in the season!

A jumble of hooks and hardware were combined to hang whatever desired.

Remember my little wooden present HERE? I drilled a hole to the corner then hung it. Instant ornament! Now I want some for my tree…

About the stencils

Using stencils is easy! All you do is spray a little adhesive on the back, position into place, then using very little paint, tap onto your surface with a stencil brush.

I’ll be showing you some new tips and tricks (and designs) along with some new stencil supplies in the new year for sure.

This release is a little like a trial. We’d like to see if there’s interest and start with one small collection.  If you like what you see, we’ll move forward. 🙂

The letters will have ‘bridges’ to hold them intact. You can always run a brush through these areas to fill in the gaps, however the bridges are so well placed, they actually look really cool when left as is.

Farmers' Market / Down on the Farm old sign stencil collection / FunkyJunkInteriors.net

These aren’t miniscule stencils. Farmers’ Market measures at 3″ high x 25.6″ wide, and all the designs are of similar size. You’re going to get a nice sized sign with great visibility!

Quality thickness

The mylar is 10 mil thick! This provides a super sturdy stencil that can be easily washed and reused over and over again.

The mylar is also slightly transparent so you can still view your substrate placement underneath.

Mix and match designs onto anything

Being that these stencils are designed for the DIY industry, you only need so many of one design, right? That’s where this collection differs.

The pieces are sized the same, along with the same registration marks, so you can mix and match to create your own old sign, your way!

So the more pieces there are, your options continue to grow.

Kinda cool, huh?

And remember, you can also stencil on burlap and fabric. Did your imagination just go KABOOM too?

Registration Marks

Each stencil wears the same or similar registration marks, so you’ll find it really easy to line various mix and match designs up. More on this soon!

I’ll be doing all kinds of new, neat stuff in the new year, however here are two ways I’ve used Farmers’ Market in the past.

  47. I love these signs! And, I would love to win the stencil collection. I did sign up for the newsletter. As far as what additional stencils would be nice, I like ones that have to do with family. I am always drawn to them when I see them and actually have them in my Pinterest DIY hoping I can make some one day. If I had the opportunity to get a stencil, it would make it much easier!
