I don’t think there’s been even one day where I’ve felt we had enough shelves for coffee mugs!
What is it about coffee mugs anyway? They seem to grow like weeds. We want pretty mugs for Christmas, but then the extras are in our way. We have our favorite mugs of course that make coffee taste better. If you know, you know. I also purchase special farmhouse mugs think would be cute in decor photo shoots… so yeah, I tend to accumulate a new favorite cup here and there a lot.
Every now and then I purge hard saving my best, only for the coffee cup collection to grow all over again. So what’s a mugaholic to do?
So when Hometalk reach out to me asking if I’d like to create a video tutorial of a wall mounted coffee mug holder, I jumped at it! The perfect solution!
Imagine if you will, wall mug racks that can be customized to your perfect size, price efficient, teacups and mugs within easy reach near a coffee maker or kettle, without loading up your coffee mug shelf any longer!
Make this wall mounted coffee rack
And here it is!
A DIY wall mounted coffee mug rack made with reclaimed wood, a few of my favorite pallet and coffee stencils, along with a surprise addition that costs next to nothing… dollar store hooks!
Not only is this mug rack excellent for hanging mugs, it can hang so much more as well!
So allow me to walk through how to make this mug organizer so you can make one too!
Today’s tutorial will be a little different… I’ll explain what I did, however you can also watch the video on Hometalk’s Facebook page linked at the bottom of this write-up.
Here’s how to make your own coffee mug wall rack!
DIY Wall Mounted Coffee Mug Rack
Supplies you’ll need
reclaimed wood boards
2 small support boards for across the back (not shown)
or you can join the boards with a Kreg Jig pocket hole maker
Hardware: hook racks (I got mine from the dollar store)
Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black
cordless drill (I favor Makita and Bosch)

Cutting the boards to size
1. Pick up some dollar store metal hook racks that attach flat against a wall. Mine came in chrome.
- My hooks measure: 16″ wide
2. Select enough boards so your metal racks will fit.
- 3 boards measuring 5.25″ x 42″ each
3. Cut the reclaimed wood boards all to the same length.
- I cut my boards 42″ long
- overall size once combined: 16″ x 42″
4. Measure and cut two cedar strips that fit across the main boards like the above picture. (from the Chevron Christmas tree tutorial HERE)
- I cut my cedar strips: 15.75″ wide.
Screwing two support boards along the back
5. Flip the boards good side down, then brace them together by screwing the cedar strips along the top and bottom.
- pencil in two screw holes per each larger board below
- predrill holes so the screws don’t split the wood
- position screws in each hole
- pump the cordless drill in small bursts while screwing in so the wood doesn’t split
6. Flip the assembled boards good-side-up.

7. Place the Fresh Coffee stencil along the top of the boards.
8. Arrange the hooks underneath the stencil to design the rest of your mug organizer, to make sure it all fits where desired.
9. Stencil the image with Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black give the mug organizer a rustic stamped coffee crate look.

How to stencil without leaving paint bleed
- Tape the stencil in place.
- Dip stencil brush into paint, then remove most paint onto a rag until the brush feels dry.
- Tap or swirl the brush through the stencil for the desired effect.

Stenciling random pallet markings on the boards
10. Stencil the rest of the boards with random crate markings from the Pallet Stamps stencil in black to get this look.
I placed the Pallet Stamps stencil in random positions, so it didn’t really matter where the hooks landed. Or you can pencil out the hook locations, then stencil accordingly.
Attaching the hooks
11. Spray paint each metal hanging rack in black.
These fairly sturdy hooks come in chrome.
I spray painted the hooks with Rustoleum high heat black matte meant for grills. It left such a gorgeous, durable finish that dried super quickly!
12. Screw the metal hooks onto the wood planks where desired.
Tip: for easier leveling, I like to hang the board platform up on a wall, level it, then attach the metal hooks using a construction level so they go on perfectly level.
13. Mount the mug organizer on a wall where desired.
I used screws to drill directly through the boards into the wall. For added strength, I suggest to screw through a wall stud or use wall anchors.
Completed DIY Wall Mounted Coffee Mug Rack
And my friends, you’ll end up with a mug organizer that will hold so many mugs and empty out your kitchen cupboard so fast, you’ll have plenty of space to buy more! haha
Isn’t it the cutest?
I LOVE this wall rack! The hooks are really shaped perfectly to hold coffee mug collections, your coffee and anything else you’d like while adding a cozy, welcoming touch to your home decor! Plus, that extra storage is hard to beat.
The Fresh Coffee stencil marries this theme up perfectly, as if it was made for this project!
The added Pallet Stamps crate stencil markings onto the boards in random areas really marries this coffee crate theme well.
And painting those hook racks black was really the perfect choice for this project to tie everything together.
This rack is also incredibly versatile! Simply change the stencil theme at the top to something else more suitable and use it to hang:
- paint brushes
- workshop tools
- pots and pans
- tea towels, oven mitts, etc.
- bathroom towels
- coats for an entryway
Incidentally, the old window hanging above the mug rack can also be viewed as a video tutorial on Hometalk HERE! Another fun project in itself.
You might say I’ve been a busy filming DIYer these days, but I’m also very grateful they lead me to sharing more fun projects with you here on the blog too!
