Fall Buffalo Check pumpkins in wagon sign

.

Fall is definitely in the air! Our days are already so much shorter, and while we are still enjoying warm weather, there’s definitely a snap to the air in the evenings.

And upon the first cloudy day after a recent heat wave, I immediately felt ‘fall’. So I promptly ran to my sketch book, created some new fall stencil designs, and of course, put them to work through some fun, rustic sign projects!

Ready to see what’s new?! I can’t wait to eventually share all new 4 stencils plus all the unique fall projects I’ve been belting out the past few days!

And here’s the first… which is my personal fav! It’s inspired by Kim from Junky Encores’ little junk villages and signs! Take a peek at her work HERE… you’ll love it!

About the stencils

.

Pumpkins 25 Cents is a larger scaled saying that is designed to match-up with Pumpkins (2 large pumpkin graphics).

This sign design would be adorable as a front porch sign, nestled beside your real pumpkin stash!

However since I didn’t have real pumpkins yet, I decided to pull out some reclaimed wood, junk and a few other stencils to make this fun fall project happen!

So, I wanted to come up with a way to marry this new design with the two larger pumpkins. So I imagined the pumpkins being carted off in a wagon… and the idea was set!

Here’s how this rusty junk adorable fall sign came together…

Stencils are from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils

Paint of choice: I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Raw Silk and Coal Black

(Purchase from a local merchant HERE)

6 reclaimed cedar fence planks – mine measured 5.25″ wide

2 antique wagon wheels – 5.5″

Random rusty junk for a handle

Measuring tape

How-to

Designing the sign

.

1. Determine how large you’d like your sign by dry-fitting the stencils and accessories on wood planks. Then cut planks to desired length.

I placed the Pumpkins 25 Cents stencil on top of the black plank to determine how large to make it.

My plank was already black but you can easily paint your own.

Measurements:

  • Overall sign: 37″ wide x 21.5″h
  • Each wood plank: 5.25″ wide x 37″ long
  • Black wagon plank: 5.25″ wide x 25.5″ long

Adding sign supports

.

2. Flip the boards wrong side up, then add some wood cross supports, attached with screws as shown above.

Adding the Pumpkins 25 Cents sign

.

3. Stencil Pumpkins 25 Cents onto the ‘wagon’ plank.

I used Fusion’s Raw Silk.

How to stencil with clean images:

  • Dip stencil brush into paint, then remove most paint with a rag until you achieve a dr-to-the-touch stencil brush.
  • Position and tape stencil into place using masking tape.
  • Tap the brush over the stencil until you achieve the desired effect.

4. Position where you wish the pumpkins to go, then stencil in colours desired.

  • I chose to make my entire sign neutral, so I used Fusion’s Raw Silk And Coal Black.
  • One pumpkin was stenciled in black, then the other white, with both wearing black stems and leaves.

Adding Buffalo Check

.

5. Add a Buffalo Check pattern if desired. (video tutorial is below!)

  • Leaving the Pumpkins stencil in place, masking tape was used to cover stencil areas I didn’t wish to add pattern to, just in case.
  • Position Buffalo Check over top of the Pumpkins stencil, stenciling one pumpkin at a time.
  • Remove all stencils once complete.

Attaching the wagon sign

.

6. Screw the Pumpkins 25 Cents wagon sign into place.

Adding the wagon wheels

.

7. Position and screw on the wheels.

I nearly went with the rusty junk industrial wheels I shared in some photos earlier, but I ultimately choose to use two antique wagon wheels I had in my stash for an added pop of colour.

Imagine the fun you could have with any salvaged wheels! Or make your own with wood cut rounds, or search the craft areas for wooden wheels that can be painted.

Each wheel was elevated with bolts underneath so they’d clear the wagon sign, then attached with screws and washers. It worked great!

Installing the wagon handle and fence

.

8. Add additional details such as a wagon fence and wagon-pulling handle.

After rummaging through my rusty junk stash, I came across a few pieces that worked perfectly for the handle! They were attached using pipe brackets.

A little vintage-inspired wooden fence was made out of a scrap 1 x 2, then attached with two rusty junk brackets.

Eeek! Didn’t this fall Buffalo Check pumpkins in wagon sign come together so well?!

And at this very moment, I had been wishing I was visiting a real pumpkin patch for the perfect capture! And I still may yet!

But here it is in my own yard…

The finished sign!

.

Which ended up being rustically perfect!

I mean… isn’t it the most stinkin’ cutest fall Buffalo Check pumpkins in wagon sign you ever did see?! I’m thrilled with the result!

And it fits perfectly on my fireplace mantel too! Which is where it may stay… I’ll do a fall shoot and show you where it ends up.

But how cute would this also be for a front porch sign with your own stash of real pumpkins?

Or add hooks and make it your front entry coat hook area!

The sky’s really the limit. And if you choose neutrals, it can stay up year around too if desired!
