Stenciled Buffalo Check front doormat

A cute front door mat has been something I’ve desired for a LONG TIME!

I generally pick up those great big industrial black mats from big box stores. They do the trick, but I’ve longed for a little mat stylin’.

So last time I visited Ikea, I grabbed a few plain Ikea Trampa door mats for just this very reason.

And I’m SO glad I did! What a difference a cute mat makes! Especially done in a design you just don’t see in the stores. That’s always the edge a DIYer has, isn’t it?

I was actually quite surprised how fast and easy the door mat took the paint!

Once I show you how quick and easy this was, be prepared… you may be designing your own door mat before being done reading this post!

And why not? It’s a fun, easy project, is totally custom, and can be made in just a few minutes. Not to mention a great workshop or gift idea!

All wins in my book!

About this stencil:

.

Buffalo Check – Large is a large scaled stencil that helps you achieve an amazing Buffalo Check or Buffalo Plaid pattern on any project desired!

This stencil is loaded with detail, offering a super realistic finish!

So let’s DIY a Stenciled Buffalo Check front doormat in just a few minutes!

How-to:

.

1. Centre the stencil in the middle of the doormat.

I centred the Buffalo Check stencil in the middle of the doormat, then planned to continue the pattern towards both sides.

Positioning the stencil

.

2. Tape stencil down, then attach pins through tape to hold the stencil position.

Door mats don’t take tape or any sticky surfaces all that well, so the added pins through the tape helped to hold the stencil in place.

I also found walking my fingers along where I was painting was very helpful in holding the stencil in place.

How to stencil

.

3. Load your brush with paint, wipe most off on a board or rag, then tap brush in an up and down motion on your surface, ending with a little bit of a swirl motion to embed the paint deeper into the mat.

Stenciling on a doormat is unlike any other surface. It’s very absorbent, so you’ll want lots of paint, yet not too much to cause the paint to bleed under the stencil.

I found that after I tapped the paint on, if I added a bit of a rotate motion to the brush, that helped to push more paint into the mat, which will ultimately help extend the lift of your painted design.

The video at the bottom of this post shows this method as well.

Being that the stencil was large, the brush I chose to use was a large Staalmeester wax brush #3600. I LOVE THIS BRUSH. The bristles are thick and stay together well.

(find the brush on Fusion’s website HERE)

The paint was Coal Black.

How to extend the pattern

.

4. After the centre is stenciled, lift the stencil, then team up like-minded squares to continue the pattern towards both edges.

When I got to the edges of the mat, I ran masking tape along the stencil where I wished to end the design, creating a bare border. Or you can continue the pattern off the edges if desired.

How to touch up

.

5. As design wears off, touch up the mat as needed.

Any door mat with a painted design (even ones you purchase in stores) will wear down with use.

The stencil will come in super handy for the odd touch ups so you can keep it looking fresh all year around!

This Buffalo Check – Large is a great size for furniture too. I find this pattern suits most any surface. If it’s a design that is difficult to achieve, a stencil is very worth the investment.

Try layering mats!

.

This stenciled Buffalo Check front doormat turned out perfect! The Buffalo Check pattern was the perfect scale teamed up with this IKEA mat!

Tip: To get more front door mat impact, layer a smaller mat on top of a larger one. It’s not only cuter, it’s more serviceable too! Especially on TOP of those big box store mats!

That pattern sure adds a nice, cozy touch that can be left up year around.
