A very special rustic style photo shoot for a friend: Neu Skin Botanicals

Last summer, I took in The Olde Farmhouse Vintage Market with friend Erika by my side.

Erika literally SAVED me, helping me set up an enormous booth, and came on show day selling her products as well as helping me with mine.

But the real hidden bonus? Girl time! We had a blast, chatting it up!

I’ve always wanted to do something special for Erika just because. So when the opportunity to reshoot her products came about, I jumped at it! I could do that! I think?!

I’ve never shot an official product line before, other than my own stencil projects of course… but there’s always a first time. So we set a date, and hooked up over this past weekend.

Erika’s homework… bring your entire line, complete with those gorgeous new labels, and some props to represent!

And then, the crate that held the gold…

Who knew that crate on the floor right there would be a major player?

More on the line:

I’ve chatted about Erika and her line before. She’s the owner and manufacturer or Neu Skin Botanicals, a safe, organic, naturally crafted skin care, via sugar scrubs, bath salts, body butters, lip balm, etc.

Erika makes everything in her own home, right in her own kitchen. Her deal… safe, natural ingredients only. And all the scents are from essential oils. Imagine how wonderful my photo studio smelled this day!

She hits nearly every local market out there, sells through her Facebook page HERE, and is opening up an online store very soon! She is also the mom of two very young girls. She’s one of the hardest working gals I’ve ever known.

But first… we needed pretty shots.

So… what does it take to take pretty shots you ask? Well…

You need natural light, a good camera, and little more…

My photo studio is a room downstairs with southern exposure. This faces towards the back yard…

… and this is the table where it all happened.

Aren’t you impressed? 🙂

Photo shoot areas have the most unique storage areas. Here’s where my lenses were stashed for the day… on another shoot prop! 🙂

Photo specs for those wishing to know…

Nikon D800
50 mm lens
micro – 60mm lens
ISO – 100
light – only natural

I used my Nikon D800 full frame DSLR, plus two different lenses… a 50mm and micro to 60mm for the super tight shots.

These two lenses have a very shallow depth of field, blurring the backgrounds wonderfully when desired.

Our only light source was natural. And a tripod, along with the self timer, a must!

All shots were taken at 100 ISO for the best quality.

And here’s a sampling of what an old crate that married the top of a farm table resulted in…

Note: these photos are not cropped… just product shots so they can be cropped as desired.

Erika decided rather than a white background, to go rustic. (boy, did she come to the right place…)

A story was also integrated, through various supplies, according to what the product either did or was made from.

One of my signs even made it into the cut! 🙂

We quickly learned, simple was key.

Aren’t they pretty?!

Thing is, these products are gorgeous… and top notch quality. They deserved to shine. I’m just happy I was able to contribute in some way.

If you’d like to see how the other shots turned out, Erika JUST loaded all the photos in a Facebook photo album you can check out HERE!

You can also follow Neu Skin Botanicals on Instagram HERE.

Thank you Erika, for the opportunity to try my hand at an entire product line! This was such a fun challenge! Best wishes on the new launch of your soon to be online store too!

P.S. Lunch was decadent too!

Now, if only this screen was of the scratch and sniff variety… you’d be in Neu Skin Botanicals Heaven. 🙂
