Need a little extra storage help? Here’s how to make a simple hanging bar with metal pipes to create easy, heavy duty storage pipe hooks to hang anything!
In my quest to further organize my little photo studio, I have a new industrial pipe project I didn’t even realize I was going to make!
My photo studio is a small room filled with windows that I use for photographing DIY projects and stencil products.
So I like to have a few tools, paint supplies and stencils nearby for when I create step-by-steps.
Since I had just painted the photo studio floor white HERE and hung new sheet curtains on pipe rods HERE, I wanted to keep the inside of the studio at a minimum this round so there’s lots of room to stage props.
I currently store all my stencils on THIS STENCIL TROLLEY but it ate up a little too much space.
So I came up with a compact way to just bring a few stencils into the studio at a time while I work with them, utilizing this small little corner!
And it turned out so cool!
If you’re searching for an easy and compact storage solution yourself, these hanging bars just may work for you too!

Easy DIY industrial metal pipe hanging bar for storage
Supplies I used:
.
- flange
- elbow join
- 1/2″ x 4″ long straight pipe
cordless drill and screws
Creating a plank base for the hanging bar
.
1. Cut 3 planks to desired length, then lightly sand.
2. Install the first board to the wall.
- Position 1 board at the height desired, then with a level on top, insert one screw into the centre.
- Tap the board until level, then add more screws for additional support.
Attach the boards to a wall stud if possible. If not, you can use wall anchors if you think your stencil hooks will hold lots of weight.
Attaching metal pipe fittings
.
3. Screw the pipe fittings together, then attach to the centre of the middle plank with short screws.
Each hook was created with ½” pipe fittings of:
- flange x 2
- elbow join x 2
- ½” x 4″ long straight pipe x 2
The finished hanging bar
.
And just like that, you have a strong and sturdy hanging bar for extra storage for most anything! But goodness is it ever perfect for hanging a few stencils I’m currently working with.
And of course, if you use a longer support bar, you can hang up more stuff.
This set-up couldn’t be easier, since the pipe is already threaded.
I also hung a galvanized container filled with stencil brushes to keep them within reach. Super handy!

Need more than one hook? Create more wall mounted hanging bars and double or triple up your hanging space!
I spaced the bottom hook higher off the floor to allow for longer stencils, and the higher hook positioned for smaller stencils.
It works perfectly! Such a simple method with a clean, industrial look!
Merchandising idea
.
Do you happen to sell stencils? Here’s a merchandising idea!
Use a pant hanger or curtain ring with clip to hang stencils facing towards you. I think this looks really cool!
Need more? Imagine a row of pipe hooks attached to long lengths of boards for a full wall. Anyone have a store I can play with?!
On white chippy boards
.
And here’s one more look using white chippy wood!
This was actually my original idea, however I decided to turn the boards over to stay with the woodsy look which chimed in better for my studio.
The boards are abundant enough to hang other stencil accessories on it as well, such as masking tape and a ruler.
The word Shop (from the Garden Shop stencil HERE) was stenciled in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black on a slight angle.
I’m pretty pleased with this fast and easy project using such standard accessories that adds SO much more storage.
The thick heavy duty pipes can handle a lot of wear and tear, flipping them into a super durable storage solution! No other hardware is needed!
And as with any pipes, you can pick and choose your own custom accessories according to what pipe sections you choose. A simple hanging bar served my purpose perfectly.
Other ways to use this hanging bar:
- use in a laundry room for drying clothing
- attach to the back of a bedroom door or wall
- entry hooks
- workshop hooks for jackets
- outdoors by the pool or hot tub
Guess that means it’s time to give the hanging bar situation a real workout. Time to get to work!

Great idea to store stencils. I think a while back I got the idea from the way you hung your stencils to do the same. So much easier and practical. And the biggest thing is they’re not getting crushed or wrinkled in a drawer. Love the addition of the pipe.
Thanks Joanne! I just ADORE how they function! And they appear to chime in well with the branding of the stencils as well. haha Always a perk!
