I always claim I’m not a big ‘seasonal decorator.’ I generally just leave out what I always do, then add small additions that jive with a given season.

But there is one sure fire way I love to make my home feel like summer nearly immediately, and that’s with freshly cut backyard flowers.

Flowers clipped from your own yard or even weeds can create some of the most rustic, natural and beautiful arrangements while spending absolutely nothing!

But what the flowers are put in tells the whole unique story…

Collect housewares

 

A rusty kettle found at a flea market came home with a broken handle.

But that’s ok! Broken things can be had for cheap! Especially how I like to use them. 

Loaded with natural patina, this little kettle is the perfect base with a jar full of freshly cut hydrangeas!

Group like-minded antique jars and bottles

 

Is there anything prettier than branch-cut blooms?

Yes! When that vibrant pink pops against beautiful aqua blue mason jars and bottles!

Tip: Have only clear bottles and jars? Try adding a little food colour to tone them to your desired shade!

Rustic lanterns

 

Ever come across some beat up rusty lanterns? I see them all the time! And they’re pretty much free because of their condition.

Teaming up a few dandelions with this rusty lantern is totally farmhouse chic!

Lantern too far gone to hang up? Tuck it into a flower bed as garden art.

Vintage crates 

 

Ever notice how abundant hydrangea blooms are? They take up a LOT of space, so finding deep and large bases to tuck them inside can make an even bigger impact, making them one of the best flower arrangements!

This antique Dairyland crate was outfitted with containers of water, then hydrangeas were inserted into each util the create appeared overflowing.

Tip: Cut some stems longer than others, so the hydrangea mound isn’t perfectly round. Let those beautiful blooms bounce!

Hydrangeas are also one of the easiest flowers to try, so don’t bypass creating some dried flower arrangements with them too!

Sewing machine drawers

 

I am always coming across spare antique sewing machine drawers and collect them anytime I can spot them. The wood is such gorgeous quality, and they can hold so many things, true antique-style!

But I adore capitalizing on the length of the drawer to display some other old antiques, such as the wash-line wheels in the picture above. Layering adds such a statement and makes those beautiful blooms pop even more!

Utilize rustic wood and branches

 

One of my favorite ways to decorate is bringing the outdoors in. So if I can bring in any natural elements inside, I will!

That includes easy builds. This weathered tray was made with fence planks and branches. It’s charming and creates the cutest vignette base to hold flowers.

I love to layer all kinds of things.

This is a metal bucket sitting inside a caged basket.

I love layers because it adds so much interest and texture! Something super unexpected.

Tip: Group all your odds and sods together and see what combinations you can come up with!

I’m afraid the secret’s out. Grab a piece of junk and get busy loading it with flowers to summer-ize your home!

Even if it is a big ‘ol dresser you found on the curb!

True story. This little dresser was picked up just down the road.

The drawers were slid open, then the cut stems were placed inside.
