Old signs, a market setup, and wrestling a tent

Sheesh. I keep trying to write about NYC, but things keep happing at home at warp speed. Next time I go on a trip, I’m going to publish while THERE. Who has time once you’re home? 🙂

So until then…

A sign market and wrestling with a tent
Hi there! Welcome to my little show setup in my backyard! Would you like a tour?

My local, little itty bitty town with one 3 way stop has a new Farmer’s Market at our local park each Friday. I went last Friday as a shopper, to take it all in.

It’s a handmade market, where you can only sell hand made things, or hand produced. Loads of delicious baked goods, farm fresh produce, eggs, and gorgeous artisan wares lined the walkway. They even had a guitarist strumming tunes.

And what is it about evenings? The fact that the market was only from 5-8 truly enticed me! It felt like I didn’t miss my day by taking it in, but moreso, enhanced it at the end.

Plus, my farm fresh eggs were to die for.

That got me thinking. So many ask if I’d sell ready made signs, vs just the stencils. I’ll just be honest here, and say, I am not a shipper kinda girl. If I have to ship you something, it may take 6 months to 2 years.

But, I’d love to to experiment more with the stencils, and make so much more than can fit my house… so why not try this short and sweet market experience? 3 hours is so do-able. You know, the ‘don’t lose out on your whole day’ thing, but ‘enhance it at the end’. Fun!

So I’ve been busy behind the scenes, whippin’ up old signs from my stencils, experimenting and having fun!

And then… I needed a tent.

I called around to lots of hardware places, but no one had an economical type that you could put up with just one person. Until someone mentioned to check Walmart.

YES! For a whoppin’ $98, this would do just fine!

Even if I never hosted another market ever again, we could use it on our own lawn from time to time. We don’t have any shade trees out back, so this would be really cool.

I should have shot a video on how ridiculous things became trying to put up this tent myself. I didn’t want help, because I knew I’d be on my own this weekend.

After dragging / beating / crying / looking for a hammer / shredding the wrapper in frustration / taking my time opening it up, I’ll admit, the ‘big bug’ (it looks like a bug!) appeared to taunt me.

“I only take 3 minutes to put together! Good luck to ya… muahaha…”

FYI: It took 3 hours for the first time, and maybe 7.5 minutes for the 2nd time.

And then it was time to play.

I REALLY wanted a demo table because I find it a super nice ice breaker, getting folks involved in the process. I’m going to entice them to try as well!

I can’t sell the stencils at this market as they are mass produced, but folks can purchase them online if desired.

This round, it’s about the ready made stuff.

Everything fit! Easy access, shop on one side, and watch on the other.

And I was right, it WAS fun to belt out signs in mass production mode! I could experiment with new ideas, as no two are alike.

The ladder strung between the two step ladders worked super well as a sign organizer and prop.

I wish every one of you could come for a visit, but here’s hoping sharing this with you here helps you to feel like you’re here anyway. I’ll see about doing some SnapChat or Periscoping at the event if there’s time.

If you’re local and around, I’d really love it if you came by and said hello!  It’s a great little market in a very pretty park, and makes for a nice evening thing to do.

  1. Oh Donna, that looks like so much fun! Wish I lived nearby! What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night!!

  2. LOVE it! I agree shipping not my thing at all. The best part is dealing with those who enjoy your work face to face. It’s such a neat feeling. We are so on the same page it’s scary..

Hope you had a fantastic evening – looking forward to seeing all those new projects too!

  3. Oh Donna, I just KNOW you’re going to sell out. Your stuff is so cool! Everyone wants it!

  4. Love them all. I have that exact tent. Great for shows. Wish you did ship. How about your son doing that for ya.. just a thought. ha ha. You will do great. Any new stencils coming?

  5. What a great idea! I know you’ll do really well.

You’re not alone on setting up those tents. It looked easy enough; I was told how to do it and how easy it was but when it came time to set the stupid thing up, it wasn’t easy. Eventually, like you, it came together.
    Good luck!

  6. Good morning, Donna

You are having way to much fun! I have had issues with the tent like you, even with help setting it up. So you are not alone. Good luck on your Friday night markets. Wish I lived closer as some of the other commenters.
