A bathroom with a ladder… and a famous toilet paper crate

Welcome to my master bathroom!

Would you believe I’ve never built a post on this room? I mean, as in a before and after?

Truth be told, the shower area isn’t finished yet so I was going to wait. That would have taken another 10 years, so here it is just the way it is.

The ladder

I’ve tried to take this ladder out of this room many times. But some things are just meant to stay put. It’s fabulous for towel storage and takes up very little real-estate.

This little project just makes me laugh. Trust me when I say, I spent all of 5 minutes marrying the licence plate to the crate, then screwed it into the wall. It became iconic on my facebook and pinterest. It’s just another one of those things that has to stay.

I adore this headboard turned towel rack with all my heart. You can never have enough hooks in a bathroom, whether it be for towels or changing. I had a sale in my house one time and marked the price up super high on it so it wouldn’t sell. I nearly freaked out when there was interest, so I quickly ripped the tag down when they were looking elsewhere.

You might say I’m kinda attached to my junk.

The nasty before

As for the before?

It wasn’t pretty. So I’ll keep the pictures small to spare you more than you desire to see.

If I were to ever give someone advice for a small bathroom, I’d say to remove the big honkin’ vanity they use to put in. I use to detest this room with a vengeance. It was so tiny, dated and yellowed.

And guys? I tiled the floor. I  had to cut every single tile to allow for the little black 2″ers. But it really did turn out fabulous! A wet saw is your friend when you tile.

I really enjoy my little bathroom. I may even finish it one day. 🙂

Here’s my spiel I did on the room at HomeTalk.
You won’t want to miss this version. 🙂

  1. I love your bathroom, and you did a great job on the tile floor. I have a big old vanity in my master bath, and I have been thinking of replacing it with a pedestal sink—but what does one do to replace the storage? It is really the only storage in my bath, for cleaning supplies and other “stuff”. But yours looks so pretty, maybe I will have to figure out something!!!

  2. I recently bought a vintage kind of “rickety” ladder that is just decoratively cool but have been wondering where I was going to use it. I now have my answer…thanks so much for the beautiful inspiration!

  3. sigh, so gorgeous… everything you do is fabulous. My self-esteem is in the toilet – lol!!! Have a great night Donna! See you at HomeTalkTuesday!!

  4. Such a cute bathroom.
I never knew you had an ugly bathroom before…lurking around in your house!
    I love the crate.
I just made a shelf out of old tool box drawers to go over my dryer…took a little longer that 5 minutes; but I had to wait for the paint to dry! LOL… it’s fun using junk you have on hand.

Thanks for showing us the before and after! I loved this post!

  5. I love your blog & I never comment! Just wondering if I am the only one having trouble with your page loading with the addition of that Ad app? Each time I try to read your blog out of my google reader the page gets hung up with the redirection of the ads?

    • It’s happening for me too. It’s like being continually spammed. A punishment for coming to this web page? There will come a breakpoint for me and I’ll say enough is enough.

    • I also had trouble with the page loading. There is an ad that shows up and at the top it says skip ad…..don’t know if it goes away or not. Took me a couple of times to get to the actual post.

    • I am glad to read these comments! When I clicked over to read the whole post from the email…a pornographic page opened. I have never had that happen before…and hopefully never again!

  6. I love your toilet paper crate – and have loved it for a long long time. This is my subtle way of saying it’s time for you to move on to other things. You can’t keep featuring this endlessly.

  7. Love your bathroom! Far as I’m concerned you can feature your toilet paper crate every day and it will always make me smile! Your blog, your junk, your creations . . . carry on!

  8. I’ve always loved this bathroom. But, what does one do for storage of all the usual things that one needs. Maybe one uses a vanity somewhere else in the bedroom to do hair and etc. Love it and love the tile. Hugs.

  9. I just thought you should know – I often pin your images. Because I follow you through google reader, when I want to pin something I go to your home page then bring up the post I want to pin. I don’t actually read you in the reader – I open you in another tab through the google reader site. From that tab I clicked your home page.

Today, when I clicked on your home page I was taken to a ‘girly’ site – pretty bad. I’ll be checking my settings on my spyware, ect because usually it warns me when that happens, telling me what’s ahead. I’m not sure if there’s any way you can raise your protection to prevent it from happening. It’s such a frustrating part of the internet community!

By the way, I’m pinning your bathroom ladder, I love that & may try it in mine if I can find one!

  10. Amazing! Love everything about it- and what a huge difference it makes to have that ugly cabinet gone! We have had small bathrooms in every house we’ve had, and when we are blessed to actually buy (instead of rent), I will definitely be visiting this space again. You are awesome!

  11. Holy cow Donna! What a transformation! Even though it is not finished it still looks amazing! Yes I have seen this photo many times but I don’t get tired of looking at it!Love the detail. You rock! I have never tiled before.Maybe I will get the courage to do that someday!
    xx

  12. I need to figure something out I could use like that in my western/texas 1/2 bath and even in our master bath. The toilet paper box is really nifty. We have no cabinets in either so right now spare rolls of paper are in baskets but the hubby doesn’t like the look. hmmmm. Wanna share a good suggestion or two?

  13. Donna-YES! This masterbathroom is one I have pinned-and LOVE-I was wrong about the details, I called them ‘shelves’-but it’s a crate above the toilet. either way, LOVE this room re-do-and I am so happy to have met you today at Lucketts!

  14. I just love your wall color in your bathroom with the latter, its the perfect toupe! What color paint did you use? Its exactly what im looking for!

  15. Hi Donna,
You are my kind of junker!!! LOVE rust and the ladder is AWESOME!!! So is the rest. I’m getting ready to move back home with my mom. So she is working her butt off and redoing the 2 car garage into a studio for me. I’m very lucky & she is so excited. She wants to stencil the concrete floors into a pattern.
I’m moving from Florida back to N. Carolina. I can’t wait!!!
I love concrete with it’s old charm with imperfections. Add some bohemian rugs and it’s going to change. However, stenciling is cool, too. If you have any suggestions I’d love to know what you think. I’m open to everything that says “Kick off your Shoes & get Comfy.” Nothing stiff or cold.
You have a fabulous eye for putting old vintage together. It’s really beautiful.
    Sincerely,
    Angie
