A stunning fall trail bike ride to the local garage dodging bears and trains – part 1

Chances are, if your vehicle required service, you’d probably assign a driving kid or your spouse to follow you to the service garage of your choice, then ride home together until you get ‘the call.’

But when you are a sole vehicle owner AND driver of your home, it isn’t quite that easy.

When my engine light went on the other day, the local garage wasn’t able to take me right away. So I had to bite my lip, hoping I’d get here and there without trashing the engine.

Today was finally the day. But the timing kinda had to be perfect, working around rainstorms and all.

Because, when I visit the garage, I load my bike into the back of the truck, then ride it back home. Then ride back to the garage to pick the thing up.

Oh, but it gets even tricker than that! This is no typical ride. I’ve taken you down this path many times. It’s become my bike trail, but it’s also the way to the next town, by bike…

…after you cross the train bridge.

And travel through bear country.

No leaves in sight though. Wonder when fall will start? 🙂

I mean, what a path!

I really wanted to show you this tour today, because I also shot some video footage on my Instagram stories, which will disappear after 24 hours.

So visit my account HERE, (must be on your phone) then tap the gear circle to view the video ,AND catch that dream barn workshop I wish I had!

Aaaaanyway…

Someone asked me if there’s potential to run into bears when I ride these bike paths.

Yes.

But, (knock on wood) I have never run into one yet. The rusty ‘ol bell on the bike is my attempt to scare them away, plus I also carry a whistle. Not sure what the whistle would do yet, but I would hope it would have them sprinting towards the next province, rather than coming after me.

So, after these pretty, meandering forest trails,

… it’s time to tackle the train bridge.

The train bridge crosses a river that must be crossed. If I didn’t go this way, I’d be biking for at least an extra hour or more. So this is better for non athlete me.

There is a walking grid to the right, but I still would NOT want to be caught on this thing when a train comes barreling through!

So I just listen carefully, and if I hear nothing, I full blast bolt meander along towards the other side.

By the way, these photos were taken with my new little travel Canon point and shoot I have yet to blog about. Spectacular little gem that thing is!

Once on the other side of the river, that’s where the real fun begins!

This trail winds along the river, until…

… you reach the wildlife reserve. You’ll recognize a few of these scenes if you’re an avid bike adventure post reader.

This shortcut is a little tricky. They close the gates at dusk, so if you desire to travel through it, you have to be mindful of the time.

No pressure during this trip… at all.

Fall is so pretty out here. It was a drizzly day, but the foliage still stands out.

I mean… seriously! This just never gets old.

HERE is this same pond in summer.

Once through the reserve…

… it’s wide open country. This is very close to where I grew up.

Remember the bike ride story of hoping my boy would #1 sway towards my parents’ farm, then #2 we ended up touring the farmhouse during construction? Minutes from here.

Just down this same road is the local neighbourhood garage.

I just LOVE coming out this way anyway, but how pretty and unique is this trip to the local fix it shop? Especially right now.

And as if the Heavens prepared the day just so for me, after I picked up the truck, it POURED.

Which leads me to part 2.

On the way back home, I treated myself to a piping hot bowl of homemade mushroom soup at the new local coffee shop that’s only DECORATED WITH HEAD TO TOE JUNK.

Totally giddy, I pulled out my camera once again…

  1. Thank you for sharing your beautiful country side. I am always in awe of nature and this was a very inspiring way to start my day!
    Susan

PS I love all of your creations you are a very talented lady!

  2. You live in a beautiful area. Love your photos. It’s getting too cold here in Michigan to ride bikes anymore, but you make me want to bundle up and give it a try anyway.

  3. What a beautiful ride. Gorgeous pictures! Please please share your camera info. I really want a good point and shoot camera for Christmas. Of course I’m sure my pictures will not turn out like these but I sure will be trying!!

  4. You are a brave soul, I just don’t think I could trust a whistle to scare a bear away, and I know I would not ride across that bridge, just call me chicken!
The scenery is breathtaking, fall is my favorite time of the year and this year it is exceptionally warm.
My husband and I took our annual Autumn trip to the smokies on the motorcycle and it was wonderful, the fragrances are just intoxicating.
Keep riding, but please be careful.

  5. Wow! That is a stunning tour of beautiful area (ok, except for the train thing). Thank you for the glimpse – makes semi-city-bound me miss the countryside.

  6. So true, Donna. Riding the same path never gets old. Each ride holds its own beauty. I personally really like the view of the water in the fall. Probably because it is my favorite season. Your new camera is doing a wonderful job of taking pictures!
