A very funky checkerboard tray

I think I’m starting to have a thing for trays! So why not a very funky checkerboard tray as well?

This idea came quite by accident. I created something I’m going to be revealing on Friday and wanted something cool for the top of it. Luckily, two checkerboards were staring back at me from my pile and I got a brainstorm.

An old reclaimed board was cut in half, then attached from behind with a wide chunk of plywood for support.

Two wooden checkerboards were screwed onto the planks, then slightly distressed with a palm sander to remove the newness.

I love using drywall screws because I can’t seem to strip them like I do others. 🙂

Ready for some major quirk? I used chunks of 2×4’s and vintage yardsticks for the handles. The 2×4 chunks were screwed in from underneath.

Cute, huh? I thought so! I just love me some woodsy wood.

Couldn’t be easier! So let’s put it to some good use, shall we?

Much better! Two of my newest most favourite books! More on these guys soon!

It’s perfect! The tray is totally functional, looks rather cool if I do say so myself, and also acts as a coaster for beverages.

Wait till you see what it’s sitting on. 🙂 Check back on Friday to see!

  1. I definitely have a soft spot for trays. I love to make them since they are one of things you can be really creative with – but not invest too much time or money. Yours is so cool. I’ll have to keep that in mind if I ever come across a lonely checkerboard 🙂

  2. Cute Donna! Like the checkerboard for sure. I don’t guess I do trays…although I’ve been looking for something about that size to cover my new Maytag washing machine I got almost a YEAR ago! Yes, the top on that thing is glass…makes me worry.
I may have to get on the bandwagon and make a funky tray!

  3. love it! checkerboards are so fun…heck! for that matter gameboards are fun, especially the vintage gameboards, or new ones distressed.
you’ve inspired me to rummage and create a funky tray of my own. 🙂
