The good, the bad and the ugly on window coverings (video/giveaway!)

If one was to look at all my own window coverings as a whole, it’s my guess that they’d probably be confused as to what I ‘like.’

My bedroom has ‘kinda sorda curtains. They’re simply dummy panels using white fabric.

The livingroom has ‘old gate screens’.

The main bath has a weathered shutter made out of old fence panels and real hardware.

And my kitchen windows are… adorned with junk. 🙂

Weirdest most eclectic collection EVER.

Notice the lack of curtains? Pets. Need I say more?

And, have you also noticed my windows don’t offer privacy? Well… I have issues. 🙂

I NEED the sunshine in.

Ok, and being that we live on a VERY quiet street and greenbelt in back, that most certainly helps the cause some. 🙂

See… I don’t like looking through things. Even the decorative grids on all my windows are up above, offering nice detail but don’t get in my way. I don’t even like looking through venetian blinds.

And can I just say how very much I detest installing venetian blinds anyway?!? 2 years ago I got new windows in the house and all my existing (new) blinds have to be recut and installed. And I have NOT done it. Why?

I don’t want to look through them, clean them, nor install them. Yech!

Now, I also get, there are times when privacy is a must. It’s rather silly to kneel down on my bedroom floor when I have to get dressed! 🙂

And then there’s room darkening reasons. My son has a VERY hard time going to sleep on time when those long summer days hit.

So where does that leave little ‘ol eclectic me in those cases?

I’m workin’ on it.

And I’m THRILLED to tell you I’ve solved one of them. My son’s room and playroom just got these pretty nifty custom shades that:

installs in seconds (DINGDINGDING!)

totally blacks out his window (YES!)

they go up all the way EASILY when not needed (LOVE!)
no pet hair issues! (right ON!)

You won’t believe how quick they install. See that iPhone? I timed myself. Let’s just say they install FAST. AND with no hardware!

I’ve just shot a video reviewing and installing some custom shades, and you get a chance to win one for yourself!

And just for kicks? This is what I look like with no wrinkles. Can you believe that chick is 48?!? 🙂 When I figure out how to make Picasa do this in real life, I’ll have a REAL post on editing… and no doubt be VERY rich. 🙂

Pssst… Cathleen… check out that sand bag pillow to the left. It has one of your grain sacks on it. 🙂

  1. WOW! I love those new shades! I have room darkening roller blinds on our bedroom windows and no treatments (curtains). It looks ugly. I had to laugh at your comment about ducking to get dressed as I do that too when the blinds are up. And, they are up first thing in the morning to let the glorious sun/day light in. I need to see out and enjoy our trees and the view.
    Have a great day!

  2. If I had room darkening shades, I’d never get up, I’m just too much of a bed bug. The only room in our home that has closeable window treatments is the guest room. We live in the woods only wildlife outside (I HOPE) so I didn’t want to block any of the view.

YOUR sand bag pillow looks great, I knew you would do them proud! I’m tickled you are finding so many ways to enjoy them.

  3. I too, hate window coverings….I need the light!!! However, living near the Canadian border where we get northeaster’s and the temp can drop to 30 below, we need to cover those babies!!! I have the archuletta blinds by hunter douglas. Top down, bottom up, I can always let a little light through, but they block out the cold…and high heat in the summer. I have a few valences here and there, but I really love the wide open look.

I love that gate/screen in your living room. Beautiful!!

  4. We have lots of windows and love the light – curtains, not so much. Thanks for the inspiration.

Still wondering what the neighbours walking by last night thought of DD dressed in her complete witch costume playing the piano in spooky light… 🙂 Might help keep the door to door salesmen away. 🙂

  5. I love your window coverings! Very rustic and cosy. Your bedroom is fabulous even if you do have to kneel. 😀 I have shades in my son’s room too, he faces south. I put shutters over top anyway. I agree, I can’t stand venetian blinds either. I have none in my home! Sorry if I’ve offended any venetian blind salespeople out there! 😉 Great decorating ideas.

  6. Well… I showed Husband your picture (he’s been wondering about you since the ‘over size load’ sign reply). His response? “Wow, I thought she was some old lady”. I told him you and I are the same age. His eyebrows went up and he said, “Are you serious? I thought she was about 38!”

So methinks you don’t need to worry about the airbrushing for a while!! LOL

  7. I love all your window treatments! I NEED, CRAVE sunlight too. Here in upstate New York, well, it’s not sunny much. So. What was I talking about?

Oh yeah. LOVE your windows and your view. We all live on top of each other here…I could just about throw a muffin out my bedroom window and my neighbor could catch it from hers. So we HAVE to cover everything here. Someday we will live in the country and I can copy all your window treatments. Today. We don’t. So I have drapery on our BIG windows – Country Curtains. All the others I have made….including the big mother one’s for our sliders out in our family room. Yeah. I won’t ever be doing that again. Guess I have some time right now…I’m really rambling.

My point: I did have one.

I love light. And if I could afford those swanky blinds that you have going on in that there contest, well, I’d probably get those. Our windows have NO moulding space for blinds. Everything HAS to be an outside mount. FUN. So if I did win them. I couldn’t use them.

Oh well. I better go and drink some water…I think I’m on a coffee rush or something….

(and just who, Donna, throws muffins out there windows? my gosh….what’s up with my brain today?)

  8. Ok, I was going to post yesterday about your “mom cave” pics. and tell you I’ll be right over for coffee and sit next to you at your ubberly awesome table. However, I got side tracked reading “your story”. sniff sniff hoorraaahh!! :o) NOW…after seeing this I think you and I are destined to be friends. How long of a drive is it from Holland, Michigan? Too much for a drive up for coffee?? hmmmm…. Anyway, I have not one single solitary window in my house with a curtain on it. Nope..not one! Sing with me now…hey sister soul sister go sister hey sister SOUL SISTER…. Thanks for ALL of your beautiful and inspiring beauty. p.s. I’m really not as freaky as I may sound.

  9. If I don’t need them for privacy they come down. My bedroom is at the front of the house however and I’m not really coordinated enough to get dressed while kneeling. So, I do have blinds. I just ignore the dust. If you tilt them just so you can’ even see it.

  10. I, too, hate window treatments. I still have paper shades in my bathroom, you know, the ones you buy for privacy until you get “real” shades (um, we built the house 15 years ago). I guess that says a lot for paper shades, huh?

  11. Right now we have shapes & blinds, I hate them both. I love the light, open every thing during the day but I have ‘peeper’ issues & need to pulling something closed at night. I love yours, especially the bathroom barn door. Awesome.

  12. I have been a basement dweller for so many years I would have to wear sunglasses if I moved above ground …WAIT…we just bought a house and we WILL live above ground. The new house has lovely white wooden slat blinds on most of the lower main floor windows…there are curtains in the front of the house windows that will be ripped down as soon as I get the key. It is so bright in there….bring on Jan 15th!!! Want to come help me decorate…it’s in Whiterock/Surrey 😉

  13. I really like your window treatments. Wish I could have something a bit more open. With the molding around my windows, they were really designed not to have blinds and window treatments.

But well, a neighbor is a Peeping Tom. I’m a female. The normal kind that runs around the house in their pajamas first thing in the morning. Needless to say, I need window treatments. Not being bothered by that person anymore, but in a subdivision, I feel the need for some privacy.

  14. I love what you have done with your windows and your post was very entertaining. By the way, the way in the untouched pic you don’t look a day over 32 and gorgeous at that. At 37 I do a new wrinkle count everyday and if I can make it 48 looking that good I will be ecstatic!!
