I admit I’m not much of a foodie. Truth be told, I’d rather be making some pallet wood project than guessing what spices do best in what broth.
However, Christmas decorating and entertaining where I love to pull out all the stops and pick up (you notice I didn’t say MAKE?) all my favourites and serve it up in grand buffet style!
And you can bet, junk and nature are involved.
Here are some unique and frugal ways to create a festive table your guests won’t soon forget!
Junk ideas for serving food
A cake pan mades the most perfect coffee pod serving area, offering a great choice for your guests.
Tip: Collect old bakeware from the thrift stores. Anything that you like the look of that holds something is game on! Vintage is my personal preference.
Watch out for those water rings! A Bingo card served as a coaster is the perfect whimsical touch.
Tip: Try laminating some vintage bingo cards to protect them from water damage
Layers of tarnished patina serve as a pretty spoon rest near the coffee maker.
Tip: tarnished silvers offer the most amazing patina! Layer them up to enjoy multiple scalloped edges.
Decor can also come from curious sources. Yes, I indeed do raid my refrigerator if I need pops of colour and other such details on tables and the like.
Tip: raid the grocery store for the perfect decorative produce. Try looking for miniature pears and apples, they are amazing as decor.
And I raid outside too. Nature has the coolest accessories.
Tip: Real leaves add real fall to your tablescapes. Go for it!
How about a little Christmas cheer next?
A vintage scale is the perfect place to stash goodies!
Sugar in a creamer? Yes! It’s the world’s best kept secret.
It has industrial edge as well as the lid never goes sailing across the counter.
The cute little crate not only adds style to your kitchen, but also offers an extra layer for the perfect little coffee station with an old fry basket holding coffee pods.
See the crate in action in my kitchen HERE.
A vintage ironing board provides the perfect quick fix for most anything if countertops overflow. You can use it for:
– games for kids
– a dessert area
– beverage station as above
How about a vintage sleigh for a centrepiece and food server?
The green boughs were lightly misted with snow spray and tucked under the sleigh.
Apples yet again make an appearance instead of glittery decorations. Nature really does do it best!
Get creative! Try bypassing the plates this year and grab something unique!
Stay tuned.. I’ll be doing something VERY fun with junk food props! I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow night. It involves video… 🙂

Truly unique and more creative than my mind could have imagined. I really enjoyed seeing your table design.
My very favorite is the bunt pan. What a cute idea.
Nothing funner than junking!!! I love seeing it mixed with natural elements!

I do now (have junk that I use as serving pieces) – you always have the best ideas. Love your party layout and congrats on getting published in a magazine {again}! You rock!
Thanks Jeannie! I’m actually a regular contributor to FOLK each issue so that’s why I ‘land in mags’ so much! haha
Can I just come hang out at your place. I might actually get in the spirit of Christmas. No, seriously, I inspired!
I have some old sleighs that I’ve painted scenes on and one grand old one I wouldn’t dare paint. Never thought of using it on my table for food display. Brilliant. Thanks. Can’t wait to see your stuff in Folk Magazine. Ordered in October and hoping the Chirismas issue will come soon.
Donna,
Love the cookies on the rustic scale 🙂

You are so clever! Love these ideas. I found a vintage scale this morning when I was rummaging around the old granary, but as yet have not found the top. Hmmm. Back to hunting. And like Donna, I too love the cookies on the scale!♥
Morning Donna, I so ‘adore’ your decorating ideas. I have an old cake pan in the shape of a heart, which I remember from my childhood. I’m going to pull it out and use it as a decorative piece. Thanks for ‘being here’.
Oh my gosh! Just love all your ideas! Why didn’t I think of that??? But I can absolutely get inspiration from you!!! Love your posts and creations!
There’s a flexible flyer for sale( cheap) at our local Habitat store…I knew I wanted it, but I wasn’t sure just how I would use it display-wise this Chrissy. Now I know! Will be off to score it tomorrow 🙂
