DIY Hot Cocoa Christmas wood sign with stencils… and marshmallow letters!

When Christmas decorating planning rolls around, creating a new hot cocoa station is always one of the first things on my list.

Thing is, my kitchen is tight for space. In my next home, I visualize an entire cabinet by itself for a dreamy coffee station I can decorate to the hilt!

Along with my woodsy vaulted ceilings with a lake front view and all. If you’re gonna dream, may as well dream big, right?!

But as it stands, the space I have to work with is just a small area right where the coffee maker sits. So coming up with a festive yet productive hot cocoa station that actually works can be a very creative process… can you relate?

So this year, I did something about it!

About this stencil

.

A bolder yet compact Hot Cocoa with Cup sign stencil was designed, so ‘cozy’ spaces are covered!

The bold letters allow this design to still POP! Along with the image of a frosty snowflake marshmallow melting in a luscious cup of liquid chocolate…

Makes you crave a cup right now, doesn’t it?

And another wonderful reason to create a new Hot Cocoa Bar is the fact that I need delicious props in the house for the photo shoot! Yum.

As a result, I came up with the cutest, compact rustically perfect Hot Cocoa Bar Christmas sign using this stencil with a surprise feature… marshmallow letters!

Double delish I say!

I love how this DIY Hot Cocoa Christmas wood sign with stencils turned out and it couldn’t be easier to make.

Tip: To achieve an authentically old looking sign, start with reclaimed wood if you can.

Remember when I landed all these fabulous reclaimed cedar fence planks that I sided my shed with? One plank came in very handy for this project!

But if you can’t land an aged plank, new cedar planks do look super rustic and are pretty price efficient too!

Supplies used:

.

Reclaimed wood cedar fence planks – mine measures 5.5″

Reclaimed wood support board – mine measures 1×2″

Stencil – Hot Cocoa in Cup

Black and white paint – I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Casement and Coal Black

(find a local Fusion merchant HERE)

Miter saw

Palm sander

Cordless drill and screws

Rustic door pulls (if making a tray)

Building the sign board

.

1. Cut 2 5.5″ cedar fence planks to desired length.

Mine measures 5.5 x 24″ each x 2.

2. Cut 2 side supports to the height of your two boards when joined together.

These are reclaimed 2 1x2s and measure 11″ tall.

My overall desire for this sign was for it to be compact, and for it to look as if an old crate was taken apart and hung up.

3. Flip the board over, position the side supports underneath where desired, then attach with screws from the back of the sign.

It’s a little tricky to align the support boards straight when hidden, so I started with using 1 screw per board so I could reposition the board by twisting it. It worked awesome!

Stenciling Hot Cocoa with marshmallow letters

.

NOTE: I will add pictures on how I achieved this effect with the stencil once they are available.

I decided to try something new! What if I paint-splattered the letters to resemble snow? But it turned out even better than that. Because the paint splattered in larger splats as well, the effect ending up resulting like there was ooey gooey marshmallows all over them!

I think it turned out epic! Here’s how I did it:

  1. Position the stencil into the centre of your boards.
  2. Place masking tape over the snowflake to protect it.
  3. Load a stencil brush with black paint, then offload most onto a rag, to create a dry to the touch stencil brush.
  4. Tap or swirl brush on the stencil to create the desired look.
  5. Before lifting the stencil, load a new stencil brush with white paint. Flick the paint all over the Hot Cocoa words to create an ooey gooey marshmallow look!
  6. Continue stenciling the snowflake and Bar in white.
  7. Remove the stencil.

I just LOVE how adorable this DIY Hot Cocoa Christmas wood sign with stencil turned out! So let’s take a little tour on what you can do with it next…
