How to stencil a table runner

When I was designing the stencil Buffalo Check, I had these wild visions dance in my head… of a painted table runner.

Overall patterns are of course cool! But just a small run of this stencil could also be enough on the right project…

Like the top of a dresser… or centre of a table.

Or… to dress up an old tray!

I loved the idea of painted fabric.

So… one thing was missing that would make this project sing.

It needed a fringed edge to complete the look…

About Fringe

.

So, Fringe became a thing!

Fringe is a one piece stencil that mixes and matches perfectly along any given sides of Buffalo Check, to create that perfect fringed effect.

I just loved the idea of getting more out of Buffalo Check, and if you love this look too, don’t bypass this special little option!

So here’s how I made this fun table runner on an old tray…

What you’ll need:

.

A wooden tray

Buffalo Check stencil

Fringe stencil

Paint of choice – I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black

Stencil brush

Masking tape

How-to:

.

1. Prep or paint your project first.

This beat up old tray had a very orange-toned finish. I still loved the wood idea, however not the colour.

The tray was sanded down to the natural finish with a palm sander.

2. Position Buffalo Check in the middle of your project, ensuring you have enough room to incorporate the Fringe. Tape into place.

3. Load your brush with paint, then dab most of it off again, creating a very dry brush.

4. Tap or swirl your brush onto the stencil.

(for a more transparent look like I did, wet/dry brush with water, then add paint / offload. Swirl your brush instead of tap, taking care to walk your fingers along the stencil so it doesn’t move.)

5. Once paint is dry to the touch, position the Fringe stencil into place, using the 3 squares for alignment.

6. Tape into place, taking care to cover over the 3 squares, so just the fringe is exposed.

7. Swipe your stencil brush from side to side, in the same direction the Fringe lines run. Like following wood grain.

Tip: Ensure your brush is very dry to the touch. It’s best to practice on something first. The high level of detail on this stencil can higher the possibility of bleeding.

8. Be stunned and amazed that you have yourself one super cool WOODEN table runner! Isn’t that pretty?!

9. Treat wood if desired.

You could simply seal the wood with a wood wax or a top coat if desired. Or treat the tray with a water based product first, then stencil on top.

Because I desired to deepen the tone with hemp oil, I did this after the stenciling.

I then followed up with a little antiquing wax to darken the edges.

Realistically, the antiquing wax being water based shouldn’t be sticking, but it is! (rebel…)

Remember the old TV tray I topped with an interchangeable idea?

Well, those legs were too good to pass up for this project!

That pretty little table runner’ed tray was plunked on top and ready for coffee time… in no time!

My kinda fabric!

And beverage.
