The voice of reason attempted to speak to me today. That voice that keeps everything on an even keel. The safe voice.
“Guuurrrrllll… don’t go messing up a perfectly fine bathroom! Do the other one to get it in production! Leave this one alone. Get your house DONE so you can call it DONE. Why are you starting more?!”
That voice irks me. It’s so conservative. I don’t do conservative all that well or I’ll fall asleep. I like ACTION. New stuff. BRAVE new stuff I’ve never done before. Even if it scares me a little.
So I did what I always do in cases like this. I did a little test run on how the new vanity would fit into the master bathroom.
I brought the counter and sink and plunked it on top of two sawhorses to get a ‘feel’ for it.

“But you’re doing more work than you need to if you do this! Back away… faaaar away.”
[ Scoot! I have dreaming to do! ]
Man that new sink is cute! I can’t wait to see it all in action.
I placed a few makeup things on the new counter and LOVED that. And the new height of the sink is nice too. The old sink gives me a sore back leaning over it, it’s pretty short for today’s standards.
SOLD! Voice, you lose. I’m going to make this work!
And if it doesn’t, I can always move it downstairs later.

My only little concern is the footprint it’ll leave. The bathroom is small. It use to have a MASSIVE (very ugly) vanity when I moved in. I honestly thought the room was a total write-off due to how small it was. But once the vanity was out, I was astounded how large it felt! I don’t want the same issue back, so I have to be careful what I put around it to minimize the effect.
I even played with the idea of setting the sink off centre to offer more working surface, but I think it would look odd. And maybe even drive me a little batty. I’m one of those people that has to see something centred and straight if that’s what’s mean to be.
[ Voice, don’t even go there. ]
Another issue we have is the amount of towels (my son) we love to use at any given time. With just the two of us. Two. People. This crazy thing is always full of towels AND clothes. So I have some ideas on how to make this area work better for us (him).
“You should just use less towels…”
[ Well duh! But it never works! Change is good! Things are going to get even better. You wait and see… ]
And naturally, now I don’t like the window. 🙂
Well, I never did. But to save $, a new window was placed into the old space. I would have loved a floor to ceiling window for more light. Or a wider one. Or just fill the wall with glass and be done with it. Can you tell I crave light?
So I have some ideas on how to get it styled a little more vintage. It’s my first crack at window moulding so wish me luck cuz it came down too! Along with the new shelves I just put in over Christmas. Whatever. That’s what crack filler and paint were made for, right?
Oh! And I want to eventually plank the ceiling too! That may have to wait. I have a deadline for this reveal so I’ll see how much I can get done. Because I’ve also never planked a ceiling. In fact, I’ve forgotten how to use my air gun. Guess I’ll call a neighbour…
I’m not sure I’ve shared one of my desires with you. I’ve always wanted to live in a house like the one I grew up in… the old rambling farmhouse style. But since I don’t live in one of those money pits and am safe and sound in a newer one, I’ve always desired to see how far I could take the new into the old. My dream if I stayed here was to turn this INTO the farmhouse of my dreams, with a little funk sprinkled in.
So this is my first official crack at it. I admit I’m a little excited!
BAM. So, the master bathroom wins, voice of reason loses. I want it brighter, more character, rustic along with the new, more productive, and finished. Thanks for chiming in when my voice nearly played it a little too safe!

I like the wall color; hope you don’t lose it completely. But, that being said, bead board or board and batten….along with this color…..would be fantabulous! Black accents, and green plants would set it off….so what are you going to do? Look forward to seeing it all

The new sink will look great. In the bathroom reveal I did a few months ago you can see that we had an almost identical sink to your current one. It came with the house and I knew it was small but i never truly realized that it was MINIATURE – until I went and bought a new sink to replace it. Even going with the lowest profile (sticking out from the wall) sink that I could find that I liked the style of – it was still TWICE as big as the tiny (child sized) sink we were replacing. Note: when you stand at this sink there is a wall directly behind you – so we were not dealing with loads of room….
At first the new sink seemed ridiculously oversized – but that was only in comparison to the old one. Now it seems completely normal – and there is still plenty of room between the sink and the wall.

I love the new sink idea! I hate pedestal sinks because you have no where to set your curling iron or makeup as you get ready! I have 2 pedestal sinks in my house, I will have to see if your counter top idea would work in those spaces! Thanks for the inspirations!

Hey! I am working on my master bath too!
And “farmhouse trim” is what I am choosing for the window and doors. Using 4″ plain boards for sides and a 6″ fplain for top, with crown trim on top board on the top and a bit of trim along the bottom of that top board. Lots of instructions online and it is a different look that I hope to do again in the kitchen, back hall and small bath. Trim can make such a HUGE difference in setting the tone for a room.

If you can put you hands on a copy of an old book, Affordable Splendour by Diana Phipps, I think you might enjoy it. Her decorating style is completely different to yours but she has the same fearless DIY approach and she did quirky things to come out with amazing results. Just a thought – when I saw your window and thought of her adding cornice work and painting stuff to look like different kinds of wood. I can’t use many of your ideas in my house, but I love visiting here all the same for inspiration and just to admire!
Seems to me you solved your vanity problem with the test run. Pull out the pedestal sink, make new saw horses that fit the counter top. Do your Donna funky magic to them (like a board across the supports for extra storage), make them look nice and old, and you’ve got a vanity that is all you and still leaves the space nice and open. Voila! A funky junk bathroom. I can see it now. 😀

Ok, Donna, I was about to say if you don’t want the new sink I would be on a plane in a few minutes… It is going to be incredible! Oh I hear you about needing/wanting light!! 2 1/2 bathrooms and none, I repeat none of them have a window! Seriously!!! Dens of darkness and two have no exterior walls.. ugh what is a girl to do? once we find out if we are moving there will be some changes around here… i know this isn’t our forever home but i am going to make it as close as can be (if we are still here after this summer!)

I think you will use bead board or boards to go along with the shutters. Just a guess. I love the new sink and what about using pipe for legs with a flange at the top and bottom? I think that will go along with your plans. Just saying!

i put in a sink like this last year when we updated our bathroom. i love it!
Well in the end the new sink is actually more practical in the ladder bath. And while I do like the look of a pedestal sink they certainly have their draw backs I think you made the right decision 1st off you really get to enjoy the new sink in a bathroom more frequently used ,and the pedestal sink will work better in that tight downstairs 1/2 bath. Funny, I really liked the sink and countertop on the sawhorses lol. Gave it a rustic open feel without an actual vanity underneath. May be a new style you’ve created “sawhorse vanity style”. LOL seriously it looked good
