This super quirky 2 ladder shelving in the entry was all thanks to yet ANOTHER closet redo.

Remember the post about the cheap closet kit in my son’s room? The same treatment was done in our little entryway closet, and this was the result. I can’t seem to find the before picture, so I’ll spare you the ugly this round.

So, while the closet was a massive improvement, it actually created a NEW problem!

In order to open the closet door all the way for proper access, the long bench in the entry was in the way.

So after moving it over…

Ladder and basket storage in an entry

… my beloved ladder organizer couldn’t be saved. Drat! There was just no room.

I really missed the quick access to garden gloves or whatever, so I was bound and determined to add something else cool to the space for quick grab kinda organizing by the front door.

What does that tell you when I can’t manage ‘normal?’

Don’t answer that…

Well, I DID figure out something totally cool, and I like it even better!

This round, instead of just one ladder, the order of the day was using TWO!

Here’s how this one went down…

How to make this quirky 2 ladder shelving in the entry

I used:

2 wooden ladders of equal rung spacing.

reclaimed wood planks

garden themed stencils – I used Garden and Potting Shed HERE

paint of choice – I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black (website link)

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Hemp Oil (website link)

1. Lay two like minded wooden ladders side by side, lining up the rungs.

A square helped line up the rungs, while measuring the edge of one ladder, to help keep things square.

2. Trim the leg lengths with a jig saw.

As you’ll soon see, the white ladder was not cut in length. I wanted to leave it intact, because my projects are generally repurposed into others down the road. But I did cut the wobbly black ladder down to fit on top of the bench. No loss here.


3. Lay a plank against two rungs to ensure the ladders line up. Use a level for guidance.

4. Attach the ladders to the wall.

Because I had random board treatments on the wall, both ladders were simply screwed to them.

But you could always attach the ladders directly to the wall with a small wood chunk spacer the same depth as the floor moulding. Wall anchors may be required.

You could also attempt to build the ladder shelf by attaching the shelves to the rungs for stability. You will need some kind of cross brace along the back.

Since my ‘cheater method’ (<— my middle name) worked, I ran with that.

5. With both ladders intact, cut planks to the same length, then slip them on top of the rungs.

I didn’t attach them with anything.

I also used two types of boards for more of an intentional scrap look. But mainly because the two different sized boards fit.

Then, let the real fun begin!

The ladder… er, ladders are back! Same duty… the baskets hide garden gloves and hats, or whatever is currently in season. There’s now even a shelf for a mini writing station.

In this shot, you can see the white ladder longer. I actually like the added quirk!



And because spring is just right around the corner, I couldn’t resist adding a few faux plants and a cute Potting Bench sign to set the stage.

I also added Welcome to my Garden on the coat hook wall to spring things up.

The board was first stencilled in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black, (website link) then oiled with Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil (website link) to bring out the wood grain more so.

I created these signs at night, so no stenciling pictures this round.

So, one other thing I did to tweak the entry was finish grouting the tile inside the closet.

 I didn’t even know I forgot to grout it. Gotta love a closed closet door.

Which leads me to other unfinished tile areas in this room. I am playing around with the idea of hauling out the tile cutter to gitter ALL done, so you may see an upcoming tiling post soon too.

Or maybe I’ll just keep turning my head the other way… it’s only been about 6 years! What’s 10 more?


Bright, functional and rustic, with a heavy dash of quirk, for sure.

Love how the ladders allow that sunshine right on through!


It will be fun changing out the shelving theme with the changing seasons too!

The quirkier the project, the more complete I feel. 

That makes today a pretty good one, I say!
