Rustic JOY Christmas porch sign
I’ve wanted a vertical Christmas sign by my front door for a few years now.
I like vertical signs because they take up less space AND don’t require hanging! Pretty convenient I say.
So last Christmas, I set about creating a vertical JOY stencil. It was later in the season so I didn’t get a chance to work with it… until now!
Remember when I scavenged for barn wood HERE from my parent’s barn coming down?
Find these stencils at: Joy – Large / Large Snowflake
One of the chippy red shiplap boards was perfect size for the JOY vertical – large, with a large snowflake…
This was gonna be one FAST Rustic JOY Christmas porch sign!
And ended up being the easiest sign I’ve made yet…
About JOY
JOY is offered in small and large, as well as horizontal and vertical, with a candy-cane like bridging in the O.
But it gets even more fun…
View accessories within each applicable Joy listing HERE
Accessories offer creative ways to replace the O in JOY!
Each Joy stencil has its own set of accessories within its own listing.
For Joy – Small, all the accessories are on one sheet.
For Joy – Large, each accessory is sold separately on its own sheet.
So here’s what I ended up doing…
Find stencils at: Joy – Large / Large Snowflake
How-to:
Position Joy Vertical – Large on a board, then tape into place.
Stencil letters in white using a large brush.
.
Because these letters are so large, using a large brush was a great way to paint in the letters. I painted the letters with long dry-brush strokes covering the entire letter from start to finish vs. tapping.
See video of the process I used at the bottom of this post.
I left out the O because I had other plans!

Position the Large Snowflake where the O in Joy would go.
Stencil in white.
.
Once again, long sweeping motions were used to paint the snowflake.
Working with the stencil design so the brush didn’t catch, I started at the outside of the snowflake, then brushed towards the centre. It worked really slick!
And just like that, it was done. That was quick!
And now it was time to play…
Isn’t it the cutest?! It’s simple, yet effective!
I love how bold JOY looks without needing to fill up the entire board with words!
In other words, this design is super flexible. You can make larger porch signs without lots of letters if the letters carry enough weight.
It turned out perfect for my front door!
The chippy red shiplap really gives the illusion of an authentic old sign.
Start old and it looks old, I say!
The super fine faux snow as well as the tin can trees were picked up from a recent shopping trip at Hobby Lobby. I took off with my friend Susan for a fun day in Washington and even brought home a big, flocked Christmas tree!
Can’t wait to share that soon too!

I love it!
Thanks Kate! I still can’t believe I got something Christmas up before the end of November! I think this is a first… LOL
I love the sign! Pinned.
Thank-you Virginia!
I’ve got Joy Joy Joy Joy out on my porch, where? out on my porch to stay.
Oh my achin’ music buzzing head! Thank-you! I think… LOL
Beautiful! I noticed you have a keyless lock on your front door. How do you like it? Does it work well in the really cold weather?
Thank-you Sharon, and I ADORE the keyless entry! The batteries drain quicker during cold weather, however you can hear the lock ‘grind’ when they are running low. Rechargeables always plugged in take care of that! There’s also a keyhole should the batteries fail. I highly recommend it!
Cute! Good thing it had been painted red before.
Thanks Rose and no kidding! It’s PERFECT. I love the size too!! Just tall enough to make a great impact! Didn’t even have to cut it!
WELL, let me think, yes, I love the word joy …. I Love it !!!! …. I just love your creative ideas and i am so enjoying your website too ! Have a wonderful holiday season and a very merry CHRISTmas to you and yours.
Thank you for all the wonderful sharing.

Love love love
Love the vertical JOY sign and the trees and all. It’s awesome. And now I can’t wait to see your flocked tree. Will you still use the tree you had last season also? I think the answer is already known. I’m excited!
Thanks Joanne! And I’m not entirely certain I want to drag out the tree that needs me to add lights… I’m a little spoiled now! haha
So much more coming soon! Thanks for stopping by!
Beautiful as always Donna. Every time I see one of your stencils I get excited all over again to finally get the ones I ordered from you. Do you know they still haven’t arrived after my son shipped them off more than a month ago? Aaaiii, that’s South African postal services for you.
Are you kidding me?! Oh my goodness… I hope they get there one day! haha
And thanks for the kudos!
