Thanks to my new bigger and beefier sofas (post HERE) of late, I”ve been finding a need to slightly adjust the furniture around them.
The sofas resemble a bigger and higher bed… remember when those first came into play? Everything around them instantly turned into what resembled Barbie doll furniture in size comparison. I ended up using a ladder as a side table (HERE) for mine!
It’s been a fun challenge shopping the house to see what I already have that works though!
One thing indeed became obvious quickly… the height of a TV tray proved to be perfect.
And those I indeed already have.
I’ve been using the Houndstooth tray makeover you saw done HERE
But this round, I tackled another one you have also seen in the past.
I loved this Homestead Blend Coffee tray design (HERE), however have never been happy with the finish. At that time I used some smelly stain that didn’t leave a super nice smooth result so I’ve been wanting to redo it anyway.
Which proved to be perfect timing for the new furniture AND a new stencil that has just been launched…
Or should I say, a variation of an existing one!
Meet Buffalo Check – Large! (bottom stencil)
This stencil is the same iconic design as ourBuffalo Check – Medium (upper left), however MUCH larger in scale AND size!
It’s huge! And so amazing for larger looks or on larger scaled projects…
… and ultimately perfection for this TV tray waiting for a fresh, new finish!

How-to:
1. Sand down original finish with a palm sander, finishing with 320 grit by hand.
.
Using a palm sander, I started with a course grit, working my way down to finishing off with a 320 grit by hand for the smoothest of finishes possible. It ended up as smooth as silk!
Some blotchiness still remained from the past stain, but I moved ahead anyway.
2. Select a larger stencil brush.
Staalmeester natural bristle brush from Fusion Mineral Paint HERE.
Being that this is a larger scaled stencil, I do suggest using a larger brush so you can obtain more even stenciling over the larger areas.
Here’s a hack:
Use a large or wax brush, and wrap an elastic band around the bristles to create a stencil brush effect.
It did work!
(special thanks to Melanie Alexander Lost & Found’s live video on Buffalo Check HERE)
3. Position stencil on tray, tape into place with masking tape.
4. Load stencil brush, then off-load most paint onto a rag. Start by painting the larger squares, then swish along the direction of the little lines once the brush becomes more try to the touch.

BAM!
Oh my goodness… I fell in love HARD! It’s such a large stencil, it covered the entire tray in one fell swoop! No repositioning to fill the surface with pattern was needed.
Isn’t it darling?
If you look closely, I didn’t stencil the images super solid-like. I worked the image to offer a slightly transparent look, thanks to a very dry brush. Natural distressing if you will.
I loved the effect so much as-is, I didn’t bother staining again. I am loving the lighter wood! Although I may add a finishing wax later to better protect the wood. I’ll see how it goes.
And my oh my… is this oversized Buffalo Checked TV tray perfect for my AM coffee!
p.s. that’s one of my pottery mugs!
I love how the larger pattern plays in the room. It makes a statement, yet looks less busy than a smaller pattern.
It’s perfect! And would make a fabulous pillow cover too! Hmm….
So in comparison, above is Buffalo Check – Medium.
And here is Buffalo Check – Large.
As if I couldn’t love my new living room even more… I find a way to do it anyway!
This larger Buffalo Check pattern is going to be SO fun to play with! What would you use it on?

I love the medium sized stencil and use it on a lot of projects. Now I can’t wait to order the large one. Love it!
