This just may be the (strangest? bravest? insert-word-here) project to date in Funky Junk land.
So, you remember my horse gate headboard, correct?
Well, that beloved gate use to hold the coats in the front entry. So we’ve been busy stuffing an overstuffed closet to accommodate the coat situation. Nothing cool came to mind on what to put on the wall again for quite some time.
One day I was cleaning up my holding tank junk stash when I just thought… why don’t I hang all this stuff up? It’s in my way anyway…
So I took it one step further and decided to litter up the front entry wall, wall paper fashion.
I predrilled holes in stuff and just screwed it into the drywall. Some things hit studs, others didn’t. I figured if a placement clicked, anchors could always be added later.
That step proved unnecessary. Everything was sound. So things were piled onto the wall hodge podge style. Nothing was pre-measured or calculated. The only rule was working around the existing bench.
Smaller items were then added to fill in the holes.
Once everything had a home, it was time for coats and keys and whatever else a front entry seems to have too much of.

The little white shutter got all geared up for key storage.
A handy little letter organizer found a home by the door too.
The bingo clipboard will be handy for grocery lists or necessary notes.
The ladder was perfect for scarves and can even hold a book or two over the rungs if desired. We always stash books by the door to take on car rides.
I wish I could see your expression… ok, well, maybe not…
After it was full enough, I stood back, looked at it and chuckled to myself. And debated on whether I should show it. But my wall art with junk for coats is here to stay… so why not?
After all, even a junk coat hook wall goes better with Coke. 🙂

I third this sentiment. Helps that you had neat stuff to work with…that could take awhile to collect just the right pieces. I need to go vertical like this because we have no true entry and no closet. No room for a bench but the hooks should do just fine! Just found your blog via Pinterest–very enjoyable, thanks!

Well, I’ll be….it’s this just the best way to beautifully clutter up your entryway!!! I love it and it really is like a piece of art. I love looking at it and finding something new and wondering about it origin and story! It’s a conversation piece yet functional and I think I’ve found my inspiration for my entryway!

Our styles have more and more in common every day it seems… y’know what, even if it wasn’t well received, that would be ok. I’m brave like you in my home, and my husband, mother, etc all think I’m crazy. but when it’s finished, I get nothing but compliments.
be BRAVE everyone! If more of us were like that, there wouldn’t be so many stuffy “rules” in the home decor world… but that can change! I’d love to see trends move more towards the “weird” stuff, no 2 houses alike.

If I didnt share the house with my husband and son, I would definitely do something like this! But Im afraid they dont look at junk the same way I do, they prefer it left in the rubbish bin!

Simply amazing! It’s so FUN to look at, let alone the fact that it’s functional. Love the 5 on the red wood. A thought on mirrors- you could always put a round one in the plate holder. I might try this in my walk-thru laundry room. Thanks for the inspiration!

AmAzInG!!! It is just wonderful and useful and artistic all at once. If only I had more than a 2′ area next to the front door I’d try to copy it. Sadly, in that little bit of space the coats and everyday stuff would overwhelm the great junk and it’d just be crappy looking coats on a wall in my house. Back in 1987 I had a huge blank wall and festooned it with EMPTY picture frames. My family thought I had lost my ever loving mind. What is HOT right now, hmmmm? Empty picture frame displays!! You just might be way ahead of the curve with the NEXT hot deco craze.

Donna, I am a ‘theme’ decorator for a living. Christmas is my specialty and in order for our store to be ready in time for the shopping season (we have some pretty insane displays 😉 I start in July!
