Wall art with junk… for coats

Wall art with junk for coats - a unique entryway by FunkyJunkInteriors.net

This just may be the (strangest? bravest? insert-word-here) project to date in Funky Junk land.

unique head board - horse gate white aqua bedding

So, you remember my horse gate headboard, correct?

Well, that beloved gate use to hold the coats in the front entry. So we’ve been busy stuffing an overstuffed closet to accommodate the coat situation. Nothing cool came to mind on what to put on the wall again for quite some time.

One day I was cleaning up my holding tank junk stash when I just thought… why don’t I hang all this stuff up? It’s in my way anyway…

So I took it one step further and decided to litter up the front entry wall, wall paper fashion.

I predrilled holes in stuff and just screwed it into the drywall. Some things hit studs, others didn’t. I figured if a placement clicked, anchors could always be added later.

That step proved unnecessary.  Everything was sound. So things were piled onto the wall hodge podge style. Nothing was pre-measured or calculated. The only rule was working around the existing bench.

Smaller items were then added to fill in the holes.

Once everything had a home, it was time for coats and keys and whatever else a front entry seems to have too much of.

How to make that huge number 2 is HERE.

The little white shutter got all geared up for key storage.

A handy little letter organizer found a home by the door too.

The bingo clipboard will be handy for grocery lists or necessary notes.

The ladder was perfect for scarves and can even hold a book or two over the rungs if desired. We always stash books by the door to take on car rides.

I wish I could see your expression… ok, well, maybe not…

After it was full enough, I stood back, looked at it and chuckled to myself. And debated on whether I should show it. But my wall art with junk for coats is here to stay… so why not?

After all, even a junk coat hook wall goes better with Coke. 🙂

  1. Can’t believe that you thought about not showing us this NEAT area…love it Donna!!! You always have so many “cool” things and i really lie seeing what you have been up to.

    Blessings,
    Linda

  2. I love it! You are so brave to do something like that. I can’t imagine what my hubby and friends would think if I did anything out of the ordinary. I love the numbers, the Coke bottle opener and fire alarm pull (it’s not real is it?). I’m glad you are brave to do what you feel and like. I love your creativity!!

  3. Very cool! I love how you just 100% embrace your sense of style without deviation. I’m all over the place and still don’t really know what style suits me or my home best. I hope to be as sure as you are someday~

  4. Well, I’ll be….it’s this just the best way to beautifully clutter up your entryway!!! I love it and it really is like a piece of art. I love looking at it and finding something new and wondering about it origin and story! It’s a conversation piece yet functional and I think I’ve found my inspiration for my entryway!

  5. You rock girl!….only thing missing for me is a mirror but then maybe its on the other wall…and maybe I am to used to mirrors all over the place! Love the COKE bottle opener…and all the personality & texture! Your creativity is so fluid and functional…let alone fabulous!…

    • You are so right… there’s a mirror on the other wall. Every time I hung a mirror on THIS wall, it reflected the mess on the other side of the room… silly mirror. 🙂 Will add one when the other side is looking up to snuff!

  6. I really love it! Glad you showed it..gives me some ideas. I have a small space by the door, and I need to hang keys, purse, and other things…I guess a visit to the garage is in order..lol. Great job!

  7. Hi Donna, another great ‘Funky Junk Interiors’ unique and wonderful wall. Totally love every single piece. The letter holder settled right in and will be very handy too. Love that piece of red barn board with the number 5. Love… well, the entire wall.

  8. I love it! What a great way to display so many collections at once in a pratical way. Looks amazing. People are going to linger in your entry to take it all in.

  9. I love love love that wall! And you weren’t going to post it? Naughty naughty for even thinking you should not post it 🙂 You are brave and give the rest of us junk lovin gals inspiration to step out on our own junk laden path. Kudos to you Donna! Keep up the good work!

  10. oh Donna. YES!
Our styles have more and more in common every day it seems… y’know what, even if it wasn’t well received, that would be ok. I’m brave like you in my home, and my husband, mother, etc all think I’m crazy. but when it’s finished, I get nothing but compliments.
be BRAVE everyone! If more of us were like that, there wouldn’t be so many stuffy “rules” in the home decor world… but that can change! I’d love to see trends move more towards the “weird” stuff, no 2 houses alike.
    awesome.

  11. SO COOL!!!!! I love it and it’s so practical too. I need something like that. You covered every base too even down to the books to take in the car! LOL! It looks absolutely fabulous! You go girl!

  12. Donna you have such a unique way of placing items right where there is balance and you make everything look so good. I use junk all the time to decorate my home and
have for many, many years. I love your wall, it looks great.

  13. If I didnt share the house with my husband and son, I would definitely do something like this! But Im afraid they dont look at junk the same way I do, they prefer it left in the rubbish bin!
You are very brave to tackle a whole wall,I always hesitate drilling that first hole, I dont know why, they are easy to patchup.
    Thanks for sharing!

  14. Simply amazing! It’s so FUN to look at, let alone the fact that it’s functional. Love the 5 on the red wood. A thought on mirrors- you could always put a round one in the plate holder. I might try this in my walk-thru laundry room. Thanks for the inspiration!

  15. Wow!!! Am-a-zing! Thank you so much for sharing your vision. I never would have thought to combine all of that, but it is so natural, interesting and inspiring.

  16. AmAzInG!!! It is just wonderful and useful and artistic all at once. If only I had more than a 2′ area next to the front door I’d try to copy it. Sadly, in that little bit of space the coats and everyday stuff would overwhelm the great junk and it’d just be crappy looking coats on a wall in my house. Please keep the picture on the internet so I can come visit it and admire it again, ‘k? Thanks for sharing your talents.

  17. Awesome! Love the #5, large number and greenery! How in the world do you make junk look so amazing on a wall? Talent….vision…a definite gift! You need your own HGTV show!

  18. Hi Donna,
Your entry way is truly you! I love it! What a fun way to take all the pieces and parts you love and use them for both a decorative and a useful purpose. You have a great eye in putting it all together!

  19. Wow, wow, wow! I am looking around my house for a space to try this. I have all sorts of “treasures” that I have never known what to do with, but didn’t want to part with but now I think I will do a combination junk wall and gallery wall. Thanks for all you share. Cindi

  20. Back in 1987 I had a huge blank wall and festooned it with EMPTY picture frames. My family thought I had lost my ever loving mind. What is HOT right now, hmmmm? Empty picture frame displays!! You just might be way ahead of the curve with the NEXT hot deco craze.

  21. I was grinning from ear to ear as I read this! This is my kind of wonderful and something I would probably do in my house if I thought the husband wouldn’t brain me senseless! haha! It’s a winner!! ♥

  22. I love it! I so can do this to my daughters room. She at this moment has clothes laying all over her floor and sh could use this idea to declutter!! U have such great ideas! thks

  23. My motto is if one layer looks good, then six layers will be “more gooder”. You seem to follow this creed . I am so glad the big giant “2” has made a return engagement – I don’t know why, but I have a certain fondness for this number you made.

  24. You have such a talent for putting what looks like odds and ends together to make a bold statement, and yet make it cute and so you. Glad you chose to share it – I also love it!

  26. Been a secret fan for a while. First time commenting. I absolutely love this look. So many cool things going on. I have a question for you. wHERE do you find most of your junk and do you pay for most or get it free? i see lots at our tips/dumps here in the uk but they won’t allow us to take any.

  27. So many great items used! Can’t believe just this morning I was at an estate sale & passed up an identical Ohio 1930’s license plate for$1!! I got so excited about another item, forgot to pick it up:( Love how it’s used here!

  29. Donna, I am a ‘theme’ decorator for a living. Christmas is my specialty and in order for our store to be ready in time for the shopping season (we have some pretty insane displays 😉 I start in July!
I love that you are ‘brave’ to pull these looks off in your own home, they are incredible and I admire your style of…’just get in there and do it’…that’s how most of my projects get done too 🙂 Your brilliant, keep up the great work!
