Rustic homemade fruit pie sign

Everyone already knows that homemade pumpkin pie is a major staple to any fall feast!

So with that in mind, I created a Homemade Pumpkin Pie 25 cents a slice stencil. I thought it would be a blast to play with for fall kitchen decorating!

But as you’ll soon see, I didn’t exactly stick to ‘the rules…’

About the stencils

The very top image shows you what the actual stencil looks like. See what I mean?

Because other scrumptious pie ideas popped up in my head! So I decided to feed the creative brain explosion beast and come up with another stencil that could help to enhance this one if desired.

With so many choices now, how do you even choose?! Nice problem to have I say.

Plus, Fall Produce Graphics also mixes beautifully with You Pick Orchard, another new fall 2020 stencil which I’ll be sharing more on soon too!

So… back to the sign…

I desired to come up with a unique pie-of-choice sign.

As luck would have it, I had just finished picking up this new lot of reclaimed cedar planks from a very generous neighbour. It is meant for the shed re-do, but I couldn’t resist… the planks were the perfect size for what I had in mind!

So a few selected pieces were stolen and my little dream rustic homemade fruit pie sign began.

Here’s what I did:

Supplies I used:

.

Stencils are from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils:

5.5″ reclaimed cedar planks

Black paint – I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black

Stencil brush

Miter saw

Cordless drill and screws

Orbital variable speed palm sander

Salvaged half-moon moulding

Rustic black hooks

How-to:

Building the sign base

.

1. The Homemade Pumpkin Pie stencil was placed across the fence boards to gauge size desired, which ended up being 3 planks wide.

2. 4 squares of wood were cut from the same boards – 5.5″ x 5.5″

3. Once the stencil and the squares were placed on the 3 boards so everything fit, a desired sign board height was determined.

If you use all the same wood from the same boards, everything fits like a glove!

My finished sign measures: 16″ w x 20″ h

4. Assemble the main sign boards together.

A black reclaimed wood 5.5″ plank was cut to the width of the sign. This would become a support board, but also to enhance the sign.

The black board was screwed to the middle sign board from the front.

5. Turning the boards right side down, the two remaining sign boards were attached to the black plank from behind so the screws didn’t show.

6. A half round salvaged moulding trim piece was attached along the bottom of the sign through the back of the sign. It serves as decorative and supportive.

The same trim was also added along the top of the sign afterwards.

Stenciling the graphics

.

7. With the main sign now built, parts of Homemade Pumpkin Pie were stenciled in the middle of the sign, leaving room below for the wood squares.

I desired the words Homemade Pie 25 cents a slice, so it could be a pie-of-choice.

So I left out the word Pumpkin, and tightened up all the rest of the lettering by eye for a nice close fit.

8. Each wood square was stenciled with a produce from Fall Produce Graphics plus the pie graphic from Homemade Pumpkin Pie.

I stenciled with everything in Fusion’s Coal Black. I just LOVE how that black pops against the woodsy tones!

.

How to stencil:

.

  • Load stencil brush with paint and off-load most paint onto a rag to create a dry-to-the-touch stencil brush.
  • Position stencil, attach with masking tape to secure, and tap or swirl paint through the stencil for the desired effect.
  • Lift stencil once complete.

8. Center and screw the pie image on top of the black board from behind so the screws don’t show.

9. Attach the fruit squares along the bottom from behind as well.

It’s looking so cute!

And I really loved how the black board highlighted the pie graphic! Nice touch, right?

So here’s how to make this cute little rustic homemade fruit pie sign productive next!

Adding hooks

.

10. Add hooks to the produce images if desired.

Hooks were chosen so they were somewhat buried in size and colour within the fruit graphic so they didn’t take away from the designs.

And here’s how it turned out…

The finished sign

.

How. CUTE! Since my photo studio gets much better lighting than my own kitchen, this pretend kitchen setup tells the whole story…

It’s fall pie making season, and this round, there’s gonna be the choice of pear, cherry, or pumpkin! Whichever shall I make? Since the sign appears to say I have all three on hand, I’d better get busy…

And remember that apple is also a choice!

By the way, that little Served Daily cutting board is from Ikea.
Served Daily is from the Lunch stencil.

And doesn’t hanging stuff from the sign look so good?!

And of course, what can’t you hang from hooks in a kitchen?

Kitchen hanging ideas:

.

  • cast iron pans
  • collectibles
  • cutting boards
  • tea towels
  • aprons
  • oven mitts
  • pot holders
  • keys

… right down to coffee mugs for pie serving time. Mmmm… I like the sound of that.

What would you hang?

Hook placement

.

Didn’t these hooks work out so well?

Attempting to keep the hooks inside the fruit graphics, and using tones close to the stenciled images helped make them less prominent.

The see-through wire hook worked well with the cherries since that graphic had less visual weight to it.

I love hooks. On anything.

Gotta love that rustic farmhouse vibe all that delicious reclaimed wood offers, huh?

And I love the grey moulding. I think it offers a nice neutral pop that adds something unique to all the wood and black without complicating it.

Now all that’s left to do is go bake buy a pie. Or 3. Heh.
