Blue closet doors with hooks in the boy’s bedroom

Well! Two boy’s bedroom posts in one week is a huge deal in these parts!

Remember the buffalo check flag pillow post where I mentioned blue closet doors?

This is where we started.

The closet doors next to the bed were sadly yellowed with time. I don’t think I have ever repainted them since moving in!

I kept thinking I’d do something really radical with them, however as you can see, repainting was obviously the better choice all along. Because the key is actually DOING it.

After a good scrub and removal of sticky tape residue (what in the world?!), I did a little test run of my fav blue. Which passed!

The cat litter adds a nice touch, don’t you think? Still mulling that issue over…

Hello there Homestead Blue… my you’re looking pretty today. Those doors need to keep that cute pillow company. So let’s get you up there!

Painting bifold doors is pretty easy. But I do have a few tips to make the outcome look flawless…

1. Start in the inside ridges, then work your way out, following the imprinted lines on the bifold door as if it’s real wood grain.

2. Use a super soft brush to avoid brush strokes.

3. Use paint that flows and covers well. This is one of my fav aspects of Fusion Mineral Paint. It glides on like whipping cream and goes a long way.

4. Always work against a wet line. In other words, don’t stop half way through. Finish the entire door. (and take those pictures quickly!)

Fusion is also self levelling and doesn’t require a top coat. You can read my full review on it HERE.

For prep, I probably should have included a light sanding on the doors as I didn’t know what was on them previously. But… I didn’t. : ) That’s typical for me, by the way.

And here they are, 2 coats later!

1 coat would have done it, however I tried out some stencils on the doors which ended up looking too juvenile. One more coat cleaned everything up perfectly once again.

And that’s when I stared at the doors rethinking the original pulls.

Brainstorm… why not add hooks for pulls instead, and add a few more while I was at it?

Well, I loved the outcome, and may even add more.

Think about it… closet doors are valuable real estate. May as well make those doors work hard for their keep!

Well now! Why on earth was this not thought of sooner?

Think there’s a chance of the stuff being hung up instead of on the floor now?!

And here’s how the blue doors tie in with the rest of the room…

  1. Love what Cody has done to his room and that he learning how to do things with hands on experience. Could you tell me his blue couch came from? I love it!!

    • Hi Vickie! The blue couch came from a thrift store. A truly lucky find! If you visit the post, you will find a link that leads to all the boys’ bedroom updates. You’ll see us bring that thing home in one of them! 🙂

  2. Hi….am LOVING the doors…it really pulls everything together. What a lucky kid..I hope he appreciates the specialness of what he has and the special mom he has! I bet none of his friends have a cool room like this! ?

  3. Valuable real estate = YES! A unique touch for door pulls and it’s awesome! Along with the Homestead Blue it’s a winner. And the room looks so open and airy. I really like it.

  4. It looks like such a calming, gentlemanly space now. I love the professional, suit and tie kinda greys, black and white mixed with the calming and deeply wise blue you used on the cupboard door. And what boy or girl wouldn’t love the fact that they don’t have to waste time opening a cupboard door to hang things up. Who has time for that anyways 😉
