I’m addicted to Ikea Gorm shelving. There, I said it.
This system is price efficient, easy to put together, and can be customized 101 different ways. So if you desire to get super organized, this is my vote hands down!
The only thing left to do is book a day to take in Ikea. Tough job, I know.
Now let me show you just how easy this is to assemble. Trust me. Even if you don’t know your way around tools, YOU can do this.
about the kit
It comes as an expandable kit so it’s easy to get just what you need.
Whoops! Wrong kit! I hate returns. 🙂
All hardware and instructions are there. Some even come with their own little allen wrenches.
But do check to ensure they are there before you leave the store. Sometimes this stuff falls off.
Solid paintable pine, predrilled holes, precut to size. What’s not to love?
Predrilled holes also allows for your system to be fully adjustable.
Gotta love the option to change your mind.
The shelves come in two different depths so you can choose your level of storage.
Unlike most like minded kits at big box stores, with this one you can get extension kits that make your shelving reach to the ceiling.
Triple cool!
helpful tools
I generally put the allen wrenches aside (if your kit comes with them) and grab more substantial tools.
Ratchets work and sound really cool but this next method is WAY easier.
A cordless drill with the right bit is definitely my preferred choice.
how to assemble
zzzzZZZZzzz
Done.
installing in your area
I chose a closet for this project.
The deeper shelf was the perfect fit.
Fair warning. As this product ages, it darkens. So if you love the blondish pine tone, I’d suggest to stain or paint it before installing. But I wanted it done 3 years ago, so up it went as is.
You CAN do this all yourself like I did, but if you had a 2nd pair of hands handy, it’s easier.
The unit was built inside the room it was staying in. I attached legs on one side first, then flipped it over and did the other. The 2nd set of shelving was installed with this unit standing up.
Tip:
* leave enough height between the bottom shelf and floor for easy cleaning
shelf position
left end
middle join if extending
If creating a side by side unit, ensure you select the right hole for the joining side.
Keep all screws loose until all shelves and all posts have been assembled.
Then tighten the works up.
Felt liners (not included) will protect your floors.
Bracing the back is important to stabilize the unit. The kit comes with it’s own metal braces or you can create your own with wood planks like I did for my office if desired.
Predrilling holes makes the job abit easier but wasn’t 100% necessary in this case.
And the finished shelving in place.
I left the top empty so I could pack it full of bulk pillows, etc.
An instant linen and games room closet was born!
The nice thing about this unit is it can be dismantled anytime you wish.
painting the unit
Here’s a post on how I built the blog office Gorm shelving. Note the reclaimed lumber braces I attached instead of what came with the kit.
Now I need a unit for my craft area… yes, I’m most certainly out of control.

Haha! Your junk storage wall looks like a candy store to me! Every home should have one! x
Very nice projects!!! A lot of people make it their New Year’s resolution to get more organized…hopefully, this will give some the inspiration they’ve been looking for.
I hope so too. These shelves have made a tremendous difference in my own home!
And I’m going to IKEA in 2 weekends…I’m checking out this for sure!
The shelves look great, I love Ikea! My favorite ones are the ones in your dining room, I love the way you filled the entire wall with them, even over the windows. Nice job!
Love it! Definitely need a couple of those. They look great natural or painted. Getting to Ikea is on my list.
That really is fabulous! I’m sending the link to my hubby. I’ll head it…hint hint! We sure could use some more shelves! You never have enough! Thanks for taking the time to show us the ‘how to’!
That is a lot of storage for not a lot of money! Thanks so much for the heads up…..and a GREAT detailed tutorial!
Have a great day rock star!

They definitely look natural. Its amazing how, you can make so much out of things that people might generally consider junk.

Pretty handy sheving units. I love your dining room shelf.
I love this shelving too! We first bought ours about 13 years ago…It has moved with us from England to Arizona to Italy to New Mexico and now here to New Hampshire! It’s gone from craft room to garage to craft room, etc. We’ve added a few more units to our collection along the way. I’m in the middle of taking one apart and rearranging my craft area right now. I think I’m going to move it around the corner in the basement to use it for Christmas and other storage and get something else for my craft area.
I have been thinking about using these in my pantry and new laundry room…..they look very sturdy and adaptable. Thanks for the great info !
Wow, you really do like this shelving! If I only had an Ikea….
I need more storage in the basement…this looks like it will be perfect! I had asked my husband if he had any more of the industrial shelving, he said he just turned some down and couldn’t remember from who…I better plan a day to Ikea! (as if I could ever say no to that store! lol) Thanks Donna, this post came at the perfect time.
Debbie 🙂

They also have some great hand towels for the kitchen right now! LOVE!!! Anyways.. love what you’ve done with all those shelves!! I may need to get some for the boys’ rooms! Hmmmm… IKEA trip?… I think so! Hugs!!!

We have these in our utility room and I’m looking forward to adding to them on our next international move. Maybe I’ll even paint them!
thank goodness I’m about to move closer to an Ikea again! I would love some of these!
I LOVE Ikea! I’ve never looked at these shelves twice, but seeing them in your home is really inspiring! Now I’m totally going to look at them and think about if I could use them somewhere.
Anyone know of similar shelving at another store? No IKEAs in our area.
Only ONE in all if NY State!

I love your projects. All are really creative & perfect. I like lkea. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, lovely site 🙂
Did you nail the units to the wall to keep them stable?
I can’t do that in my home and want to make sure that they’ll hold…….
Can you please tell me what kind of paint you used on your Gorm shelving unit? And, how many coats did it need? I’m thinking of getting one for extra storage in my kitchen and would love to paint it a fun color, but I have no idea what kind of paint to use and how much. Thanks!
Pinning RIGHT NOW!…

Thank for sharing this wonderful post. I’m not able to make my own custom shelving because of busy schedule So I have purchased shelving kit for an online website http://www.shop4shelves.com/shelving/garage-shelving.html. I’m inspired through your above post. And it will be sure that I will create my own shelving when I will free from my busy schedule.
Thanks for sharing such a nice thought, piece of writing is good, thats why i have read it entirely
THANK you for posting these directions!! Fast forward 2 full years, and they are discontinued. But I bought a set off of a friend which of course didn’t come with assembly instructions. I feel much more confident in putting these suckers together 😉
i love these shelves…my 2-bed house is 748 sq. ft…which is good most of the time…my furniture is beginning to fall apart after all these yrs…i’m 65 and need some really good ideas for my little house…my kitchen has windows over the sink…can’t leave the curtains open because the evening sum bakes the inside of the house..i wondered if these shelves maybe a little more narrow would do a good deal over these two windows…i could put my kitchen collections, salt/pepper shakers, tea pots and some other collectibles on these shelves…then i could put some of the curtains up that shield the light…i think it would upgrade my kitchen and give the windows some pizzazz…
I’m not sure if Ikea still carries them, but the Gorm series use to come in two different depths. I hope you can find something that works, I find these very sturdy!
