Wood hot cocoa bar appliance garage
So, every Christmas I attempt to come up with a new version of a Hot Cocoa station.
I love the challenge of changing things out!
But this year, I desired to try something completely different…
It all started with this cute and easy to make Hot Cocoa sign on reclaimed wood I made HERE. The size of the sign was so perfect for under the kitchen cupboards, but with kitchen coffee gear sitting in front of it, it wouldn’t have shown up all that well!
So… I decided to turn this Hot Cocoa sign into a wood hot cocoa bar appliance garage instead! That way, just the pretty stuff shows, while hiding all the other kitchen gear!
And boy, did this work out! In fact, I’m so pleased with how it functions, I plan to switch out the Hot Cocoa sign for a Fresh Coffee one after Christmas and keep it around for a good long while!
Update: Here’s the Fresh Coffee appliance garage version!
This wood hot cocoa bar appliance garage is a great idea if you need your gear handy but don’t want to look at it all the time. This does the trick well!
Here’s how it was made and how it works…

Supplies I used:
.
Hot Cocoa sign I made from THIS post
Reclaimed wood
2 hinges
Cup eye and hook
Risers made from a wooden closet dowel
How-to:
.
Building the crate
.
2 sides and a top and bottom was cut from reclaimed wood to the same overall size of the Hot Cocoa sign.
So basically put, whatever you make your sign size, just make the rest of the boards fit it.
Measurements:
.
- Sign: 10.5″ high x 24″ wide using 5.25″ wide planks.
- Sides: 7.5″ wide planks x 9.5″ long
- Top and bottom: 7.5″ wide planks x 24″ long
The top and bottom were attached to the sides with screws to create an open backed rectangle.
The hot cocoa sign was connected to the box with two hinges joined at the bottom.
Because the sign had side supports, it sat higher off the ground than the flat box does. I wanted the open lid to be the same level as the box once opened.
So added legs to elevate the bottom worked great!
A wooden closet dowel was cut into slices to the height desired, then pre-drilled and attached to the bottom of the crate with screws.
To keep the lid closed, a cup and eye hook was added on the top of the crate along with an additional rusty junk plate for added bling.
Then it was time to try it all out…

So here’s the completed wood hot cocoa sign appliance garage closed… isn’t it so rustically cute?!
… and here it is open! Thanks to the added feet, the lid when open sits at the same height as the bottom of the crate.
So let’s put it to work AND pretty up the kitchen for Christmas!
Appliance garage in the kitchen:
.
Yes. YES!!! It’s as Christmas Hot Cocoa cute as can be!
The hot cocoa gear sits on top of the appliance garage in clear jars, so it looks festive and is easy to reach. Perfect!
But what’s hiding inside is the big sell for me…
Tadaa!
Hello there hiding coffee gear! Look at you all tucked away out of sight!
That fit though… the appliance garage turned out to be the perfect height and width to house the kettle, coffee bean grinder and french press! Right down to the right sized jars on top. I sure lucked out!
So let’s have some coffee and try it all out…
Since the appliance garage is open from the back, everything can be left plugged in with easy access to the light switch and plugs as well!
Seriously. This is wood hot cocoa bar appliance garage a great idea. Why haven’t these been invented yet?!
Oh wait… I did, you say?
Well now you can make one too!
By the way, my coffee pot had just died, and that’s when I discovered I had a brand new french press I hadn’t even used yet. And I LOVE it and don’t miss a coffee pot one bit! Especially now that I don’t have to look at one either.
All pretty for Christmas…
AND ready to work hard first thing in the AM. Can you even?!
I’m so thrilled with it!
Now let’s enjoy a well deserved cup of hot cocoa. ‘Tis the season after all.
And stay tuned for the Fresh Coffee version in the new year… cuz you’re gonna love that one too!

Thanks Laura! I sure had fun with this one and it’s nice to walk into the kitchen with it looking cute vs. cluttery!
How cute & functional! You should sell them! Have a Happy Christmas!!!!
Thanks Sharon! I know… it’s like, why don’t these exist?! But they are easy to make so there’s that!
First, I love the wording appliance garage. Second, it’s great and easily replicable. Goodness, I’ve got the makings to put one together. Wonderful idea Donna. I noticed the round metal discs on the underside of your cabinets and wondered if they were lights. Thanks for all your time spent creating and sharing. It’s fantastic.
Absolutely adorable!
