What is it about chalkboards?! I love the look of one, even though I don’t really desire to write on one with chalk! Anyone try the chalk pens yet? I’ve yet to but sure want to.

I think I love them because they help anchor a room feature so well.

And if painted black, look SO good against reclaimed wood… of course.

For this reason alone, painting out bulletin boards is just a great idea! However for added texture, I like adding one more thing to them…

… and that’s twine.

I love collecting this stuff in all weights because it comes in so handy for hanging, etc.

I’ve done this twine treatment on THIS larger chalkboard I made awhile back too.

Then add a few reclaimed wood fence planks as a full frame, you end up with a pretty cute place to hang your notes and office gear! Thank goodness for rusty S hooks I say.

So, here’s how I put this little fella together if you are so inclined to desire one too! Or perhaps a variation of one.

What I used:

24 x 36″ cork bulletin board

Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black or find a local merchant HERE

OFFICE stencil in small

Stencil brush

Heavy twine

Jigsaw or mitersaw

Cordless drill and screws

How-to:

1 – A 24″ x 36″ cork board was coated out with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black to turn it into a chalkboard.

2 – Once the bulletin board was mounted to the wall with screws, random reclaimed wood fence boards were positioned and screwed into place.

As you can see, I used a couple boards with pointed tips only because those boards were sitting around like that. Why not, right?! It adds a special quirkiness you wouldn’t expect.

3 – Next, three screws were added to the boards in a zig zag shape.

4 – Heavy twine or thin rope was knotted at one end, then threaded along the next two screws, ending in a knot once again.

Once the twine was in place, the leftover was snipped off.

5 – A fence plank was stenciled with OFFICE in Fusion’s Coal Black.

6 – The OFFICE sign was then installed on the right side, hiding where the twine was screwed on. Cool, right?

Don’t even ask me how I came up with this…

Isn’t it delightful when you have no idea why you did what you did but you like it anyway?

Welcome to my spontaneous world.

So anyway, because I ‘totally planned’ yeah I don’t think so this fabulous gap along the bottom board it provided the perfect spot to hang all kinds of rusty S hooks to hang up office gear!

And to add a dash of work authenticity, added a cute OPEN sign I first showed you HERE

  1. Miss Donna, i LOVE doing chalkboard art and change the art on my reclaimed boards every month…. but my friend Amy Thayer of ‘Shoestring Amy’ came up with THE BEST HACK for chalkboard art: forget chalk pens. use liquid WHITE SHOE POLISH!!!! :O

Genius, right?!!! she uses paintbrushes that she dips right into the bottle (after she’s removed the sponge top) to letter her boards. i haven’t tried it yet, but i’m gonna!!!

  2. Ohh la la did I just spot some twine? Give me a project with twine and I am a happy girl! Love what you did here Donna. I am also trying to incorporate black and twine into my new space but have to be careful not to make it too dark. Love the rustic beauty of our idea.

  3. I love your newest office version, Donna but it’s hard to pick a favorite. They’re all awesome!
I had saved your Lanai posts for when I had enough time to really enjoy them and that was today. The landscape is really beautiful and the architecture is cute. The best thing of course is the cat sancturary though. I don’t blame you for spending so much time there. They would probably need to kick me out if I’d get the chance to visit. It’s wonderful that so many kitties have such a great and safe place there. Thank you for sharing! It made me smile. I don’t know if you like to read. I recently read several books by Toby Neal (Lei Crime Series) which take place in Hawaii. I liked the stories very much and I had to think of you.
    Happy Easter!

  4. Yes, yes, yes! The rustic wood, black, and twine are such a great combination! I have a hard time “embracing” burlap, but twine is sooooo lovely. With your new white walls I am sure all these new rustic additions are fabulous. Totally enjoying your creative energy. Best… Brenda

  5. Oh dear, I think my ever expanding laptop butt is in some serious trouble now. I would never ever leave the office if it looked like this. Can I please come work for you. I’ll cuddle the kitties, move stuff from the sofa and polish your old truck too 😀 It’s lovely Donna, all of them
