Rustic Christmas tree in a crate with living room tour, and some news

Although I didn’t do nearly as much Christmas decorating as I initially intended, that’s a-ok! A little is better than nothing at all. So I have a mini home tour for you today… of my living room!

I mean, if you’re going to only do one room, may as well make it the one that really counts, right?

So… here’s this year’s rustic Christmas tree, dressed up in neutrals of metal and tangled up twine.

Tree is from IKEA, no longer available, but similar to THIS Christmas tree.

The faux tree was discovered during THIS shopping trip to Ikea, and I fell in love with all those uneven branches, so I had to give it a try.

It’s a smaller scale that takes lots less visual room, so it helped to beef it up a little with that big ‘ol crate as the base.

Complete with a funky little You Cut saw sign for good measure.

Funny story? I forgot to turn on the Christmas lights for this picture. But half the lights shorted out as soon as it was decorated. Glad it looks ok without!

Come on in and sit a spell!

You’ve already seen the wreath filled fireplace mantel and wooden stocking tutorial HERE.

But this round, the lights are out.

I think it looks better!

So I guess I’ll save the lights for when I watch Ellen, This is Us, The Crown, or Survivor at night.

Any of those shows your favs too?

And the two new chairs together! Makes for a super cozy sitting arrangement near the fireplace.

Junk lamp tutorial is HERE.

Saw horse side table is HERE.

I’m really enjoying them! They are super deep, where you really do want to curl up your legs. But I do have a #1 super favourite place to sit…

The new sofa is MY special space!

One of you questioned the low backs on the chairs. The sofa against the stair rail removes the lack of support issue. I plunk a pillow up there and have all the support in the world!

This is my new girl cave.

Loving the black and white theme! But isn’t that stencilled snowflake pillow the cutest?

It is the perfect touch of winter, which will last well beyond December.

These two crates stacked up were done when the new furniture pulled in.

Here’s how I ultimately revamped the crates into an industrial side table!

I nearly got fancy with it, installing castors, but honestly, stacked worked perfectly. No fuss needed.

Wreath is from Ikea, and lamp from Walmart.

My little professional snoozer is waiting for a cuddle…

Who am I kidding. He’s out cold.

If you have pets and don’t wish to get pet hair all over your throw blankets, hanging them up works great!

I have this coat rack that stands by the sofa, which works perfectly.

This little interchangeable Christmas TV tray has also proven to be fabulous! The small infusions of wood really warm up the space.

Made with the Christmas Blend Hot Cocoa stencil found HERE.

And that’s a Christmas wrap!

This will likely be the last Christmas decorating post I make… unless I decorate elsewhere. Which is a possibility!

I’m actually not entirely sure when I will post next.

By the time you read this, I’ll be safely tucked away in an airport hotel, ready to leave the next AM for some sand and sunshine!

It’s my Christmas gift to myself. I booked the trip last summer, but over time, cancelled it.

But life kept reopening the door, with so many supporting it, and pointing me in that direction.

So I finally bit the bullet, quit fighting it, and said OK! I admit I need it, want it, and by golly, I’m gonna enjoy it!

My goodness. This one’s truly all about me… do not wake me up!

I’ll be back home before the entire Christmas season is a complete wrap, so I can still spend time with family. The best of both worlds!

So…

And if you can guess what Merry Christmas language that comes from, you’ll have guessed where I’m going!

I think I’m feeling challenged to create a new slide show to this song

  1. Yay! You’re on your way to your favorite place. I won’t give it away since it seems I’m the first commenter. Donna, the whole room is beautiful! It creates a nice, serene feel that is just perfect for relaxing and watching the Crown, which I’ve seen and loved! I’m going thru Selfridge right now.

I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope the New Year brings you health, happiness and most off all peace of mind. And we want pics from your new destination, of course!

  2. Packing for a new change of scenery sounds amazing. Something I need to do in 2017. I love this room that tree is just sweet, had to do a double take because it looks pretty real from a distance. I did minimal decorating this year and loved it. I’m finding that less really is best, which takes me to this Hallmark Christmas movie marathon I’ve been on Kind of a treat – if I finish my work for the day I reward myself to a flick, a fun way to escape I guess without going anywhere. Wishing you a blessed season of Goodness. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

  3. Merry Christmas Donna! Your living room looks so cozy and inviting, I love your minimalist decorating (and less to put away)!
Have a wonderful vacation relaxing in your favourite place and all the very best for you and your son in 2017.

  4. Love, love, love your tree & decorating. I’ve started going down the road of “less is more” the last couple years. To me, my favorite Christmas items seem to stand out more without a lot of competition from other items. The idea of the crate as a tree stand is wonderful. My little table topper is in an enamel pail. Have fun in Hawaii and then come home to a cozy family Christmas! Merry Christmas Donna!!

  5. Hi Donna. I love your simple Christmas decor. I did the same thing this year. Bought the perfect six-foot Charlie Brown Christmas tree for $19.00 at the local tree lot. My favorite ornaments, a couple strands of lights….beautiful! Keep it simple. Merry Christmas!

  6. Good morning, Donna

So love your tour this am. You mentioned everything but the heart which looks like wood above what appears to be a boxwood wreath. Did you make it? Safe travels to your happy place (a well deserved trip). Happy holidays to you and your family and look forward to your next post.

  7. The room is very nice, love that tree. I guess that you are headed to Hawaii I know that “Merry Christmas” from the movie Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase they play it when he dreams about the pool he will put in with his bonus $. So funny how you are headed to the sun and warm weather but that something I have everyday and hate it I want to go back North where I am from, I may live in the deep south but I live the northern life. Have a wonderful vacation! Lisa@ Sweet Tea N’ Salty Air

  8. LOVE your simple faux decorating. That tree has to be the most realistic faux tree I’ve ever seen…perfectly imperfect.
    Enjoy your much-needed getaway.

  9. Have fun in Hawaii! It would be nice to hear how you manage to make it affordable, it’s on my wish list but the cost of flights and accommodation appear prohibitive. Any tips on getting a good deal would be much appreciated, thanks!
