Today’s project is a fun one… it’s what I call a shipping crate cutting board tray, and it’s become one of my favorite things!

I was inspired by Becky at Beyond the Picket Fence’s festive cutting board tray she made HERE, and I’ll share where I used it in a second… but first up…

While I was creating Christmas projects this past season, I decided to try something new.

With such a quick setting sun resulting in diminished photography hours, I decided to make short and sweet projects through video tutorials instead of blog posts…

EGADS! It was weird! SO weird. But in a way, it was wonderful too.

I hadn’t realized how often I talk myself through a project… much of which ended up in the videos!

Which means even more tips. More than I write about!

Who knew?

Regardless, I ended up with quite the little collection of super helpful videos specifically geared to teach you to get exceptional stencil results!

They were shared on social media and have been very well received!

But I also realize, not all of you are on social media. And some of these projects need a home. So from time to time, I’ll build some regular posts around the projects like I am for this one today.

As for the rest? They will now reside in the blog navigation bar under Old Sign Stencils / Video Stencil Tutorials HERE.

So let’s take a peek today at one of my favs…a shipping crate cutting board tray that is all kinds of helpful AND cute! With a little surprise on the other side…

How-to:

I landed this cutting board in a thrift store.

A palm sander was run over the entire surface, removing all the cuts and smoothing everything out.

It was then stenciled with Shipping Crate Stamps in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black, then waxed with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Liming Furniture Wax.

I really loved this wax! It offered sort of a white wash effect to the wood tone. And ended up buttery smooth to the touch!

I just absolutely love this little piece! It repels liquids wonderfully, and the size makes quite the exceptional surface protector, much like a giant coaster.

And I mean… it’s CUTE!

I really created the shipping crate cutting board tray to use on this little coffee table from my Christmas living room tour HERE.

The rustic wood on the table wasn’t really food-worthy, so the cutting board topper was the perfect fix for a coffee tray or table protector!

The Christmas tour shared the ‘everyday’ shipping crate side of the table. But there was another side too…

If you flipped it over, it had a little subtle festive touch from the Christmas Crates stencil!

How-to:

After stencilling with Christmas Crates, the cutting board tray was then waxed with Homestead House Salad Bowl Finish.

This is a food safe wax which I’ve always wanted to try. And boy does it smell delicious, just like honey!

The finish leaves more of a more traditional wood tone, bringing out the natural orange tones of the wood.

It was great testing out two waxes, so I could share how they ended up with you!

The video tutorial below explains pretty much everything, so I’ll let it do the rest of the talking.

Anyway, I’m rather sold on collecting cutting boards at this point! The wood is such a nice quality, and if you land one in a thrift store, you already know it’s going to be super price efficient!

I’m not accustomed to such ‘nice’ wood, so this was a treat!

And now I think I want a permanent coffee table topper that resembles this tray… consider me officially shipping crate cutting board tray spoiled at this point!

  1. Hi there, your video link doesn’t seem to show up on Google Chrome on Mac. I was so looking forward to seeing the video on the cutting board tray

  2. Nice shipping crate cutting board Donna. I found what you said about the waxes interesting. You know the sky is the limit with designing cutting boards. And when I come across them, they’re pretty inexpensive. Putting handles on them is one of my favorites. Now I’ve pondered doing it, but haven’t yet. Maybe now I will. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks Joanne! Yes, I’ve found the wood to be always top quality on a cutting board no matter what, so they are super good foundations to play upon!

I’ve collected quite a few smaller ones over the years and used them as coasters and such, however I’m now on the lookout for much larger ones too!

  3. Good morning, Donna

Another great project! I have several old cutting boards. One I put in our outback (outdoor) kitchen on the shelf with other kitchen antiques. Left it as is because it will not be used.
