Wood round Christmas sweater ornament

The Christmas decorating home stretch is finally happening here! The projects I’ve been making are finding their way onto walls, sofas and more. Yay!

For when you make most of your own Christmas decor, it takes a little time to accumulate ready-to-go stock. The other day on Instagram stories, when I shared my floor to ceiling junk stash where I’ll be pulling from to finalize the finishing touches, it made me laugh. Not your typical Christmas storage box by a long shot!

But that’s just the way I like to do it… homespun, junk-infused decor that’s one-of-a-kind creative. I even painted my own ornaments black for this year’s tree!

There’s lots going on that I haven’t shared yet… which you’ll see soon!

So while I was sharing my junk stash, my eyes landed on a broken lazy susan stuffed inside a crate. Pulling it out, I found myself murmuring…

“Boy, that sure would look cool as an oversized Christmas ornament…”

So you know I had to make it, right?!

Gathering a few other pieces to make this easy project work, a wood round Christmas sweater ornament was indeed born!

This project could also work with ready-made wood rounds found at most hardware stores. Or just make a lazy susan look pretty!

Regardless, this outcome turned out pretty adorable.

Here’s what I ended up doing:

Painting the wood round

.

1. Pick your red paint of choice.

This round, I’m featuring Barn Red, a milk paint by Homestead House!

Milk paint comes in powder form, and is very easy to mix with equal parts water and powder, although I go a little heavier on the powder.

Here’s how I mix milk paint:

.

  1. Pour milk paint powder in a container.
  2. Add a little water.
  3. Stir it into a paste.
  4. Top off with more water as desired.
  5. Consistency should end up like whipping cream out of a carton.
  6. Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Give it one more stir, then paint!

Milk paint typically ends with a flat finish you may wish to top coat with hemp oil or furniture wax, but I really liked how the flat gave the ornament more aged character!

Stenciling the pattern

Next up was to add the charming sweater pattern!

How to stencil:

.

  1. Center the Christmas Sweater stencil in the middle of the wood round.
  2. Load stencil brush with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Raw Silk. (an off-white)
  3. Off-load most paint so brush feels dry-to-the-touch.
  4. Stencil the pattern, then continue the pattern on all 4 sides until coverage is complete.

Attaching an ornament cap

.

Next up was to create an ornament cap.

A small board (1 x 2) was positioned to the back of the wood round a couple of inches higher than the ornament, then attached with screws.

A bent wire acting as an ornament hook was screwed to the back of the board.

Decorating with evergreen branches

.

Fresh evergreen branches were bundled together like a mini swag, then tied in the center with twine.

The swag was attached to the ornament wood tip with a screw.

Above is the ornament tip still in wood grain, which I later painted black, shown below. I think black really finished it off!

That Barn Red though… isn’t it amazing?

I also LOVE that the finish had sort of a gritty texture to it. (intentional) Milk paint is a whole different thing that can take on so many wonderful effects which I plan to start using more-so!

  1. I’ve saved a few metal wire clothes hangers for crafts. Do you think I can use that for the ornament hook? Love this so cute.
