Make this You Cut Tree Farm Christmas arrow sign!

This post has been updated on Nov 1 2020.

Today is a big day. A REALLY big day. It’s a little nerve wracking yet exciting… because I finally have something to offer that I’ve been asked about for a long, LONG time.

Deeeep breath…;

12 Days of Christmas 2013For years, readers asked how I make the DIY signs that I do.

So at long last, there is now a line of what I call Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils so you too can make the signs I do… right down to the same font!

About the stencils

.

Visit Funky Junk's Old Sign Stencils store HEREFunky Junk's Down on the Farm Mix and Match Stencil Collection FunkyJunkInteriors.net

Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils are a collection of high quality 10 mil reusable mylar stencils, designed around market signs.

The above is our first collection we released. We’ve since introduced many other designs including iconic patterns such as Grain Sack Stripes, Buffalo Check and more!

This rustic You Cut Tree Farm Christmas arrow sign is made from stencils, reclaimed wood and rusty junk. It’s a fabulous Christmas sign that is perfect for Christmas decorating, or add hooks to hang things!

Supplies I used:

.

You Cut Tree Farm stencil from HERE

Swoosh stencil from HERE

Reclaimed wood

Rusty junk pieces

Stencil brush

Paint of choice – I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Casement (white)

How I did it:

.

  1. Attach a long board to a triangle shaped board (I used a shingle) with a couple of old relic hinges.
  2. Stencil the main board with You Cut Tree Farm.
  3. Add a Swoosh underneath the lettering.
  4. Lightly distress with a palm sander.
  5. Coat with a wax or oil for wood. (I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil)
  6. Hang it up!

I had an old board that was about the right size. I just lightly sanded it.

Then an old shingle became the arrow tip. I cut the shape with a jig saw, then attached the arrow head to the board with a couple of old hinges I landed in this pile of junk.

At first I laid out where all the rusty junk ‘could’ go. I later decided to incorporate lettering so it became an actual Christmas sign, then use rusty junk around that.

How to add a spacer to the back of the sign

.

Rather than traditional hooks (because I didn’t have any!), I then decided rusty S hooks could be used for hanging! Perfect!

Because of that, I added wood cut slices as spacers behind the sign so there’d be room for the hooks to sit.

The finished You Cut Tree Farm sign

.

Then the sign was stenciled in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Casement.

Stencils used:

.

You Cut Tree Farm

Swoosh

The S-hooks were hung up, then an antique pulley, rustic wreath and wood block present were hung up to finish it off!

And the result was a really old looking You Cut Tree Farm Christmas tree arrow sign that is as festive and rustically cute as can be! With endless possibilities.

A jumble of s-hooks and rusty junk hardware were combined to hang whatever desired.

The sign was distressed by gently using a palm sander.

Remember my little wooden present HERE? I drilled a hole to the corner then hung it. Instant ornament! Now I want some for my tree…

The rusty junk s-hooks worked out perfectly… even layering a few!

Gotta dig that quirky little Christmas tree and star! Imperfectly perfect I say.

Rusty hinges on sign / Make this rustic Christmas arrow sign with stencils / FunkyJunkInteriors.net

Two rusty junk hinges hold the shingle arrow tip in place.

You could also further stabilize the pieces together from the back as well if desired. But this did the trick.

The You Cut Tree Farm Christmas tree arrow sign with no decorating is cute too!

But even more so with!

The s-hooks are great for hanging coats and hats too! A perfect Christmas sign for a front entry.

I already subscribe. Numbers would be great for a future sign and I really live the & sign, and what about a design like a tricked out flower and vine? I can’t wait to see more!

  5. I love all of your stuff!!! I do get your emails each day, and I just signed up for your signs newsletter!! thank you!!!

  6. I love all of the stencils you have created! With you sign making skills I was wondering how long it would take you to start making and selling!!!!! Glad you did. I would love to see more home related stencils with some sports (winter skiing) thrown in for good measure.

    Lugene

  7. oh my gosh! I love these stencils…….especially the farmers market! I would love to see a set with fruits……..like apples, blueberries, cherries 🙂 I would make signs and it would encourage me to eat healthy! 🙂

  8. I already receive your daily blog posts! Look forward to getting it every morning and reading with my hot tea! Thank you so much for your inspiration.

  9. I also receive the weekly newsletter! It’s great just in case I might have missed a daily post…. Yeah like that is going to happen! Thanks again Donna for all your great inspiration.

  10. I am new here and loving it! Yes I would love to see more mix and match collections! Of anything and everything! I think the stencil is a great idea. I have been making signs for years now too, and I always have people asking how I make them.

  11. The mix and match themes are really neat! I’d like to see some Christmas mix and match with words like “Joy”, “Peace”, “Hope”, etc.

  12. LOVE stencils! Would love to see more ideas! I am very into country/primitive decor so anything in that category would be amazing!

  13. I’m signed up and a new follower! Looking forward to yours, downsizing to a small beachside home hopefully soon, and want to completely redo my style, want to re-use and recycle-especially pallet projects. Would like to see stencils for corners of windows. Not all windows in Florida need drapes, and would love to stencil the upper corners of our window frames. Let the sunshine in! thanks, Stacy

  14. Thank you for this opportunity. I’ve always loved your ideas and now sign making made easier is no exception. Would love the “Farmers Market” stencil.

Please keep up the good work.

    LuAnn

  15. Already receiving your daily blog notices. The stencils are a great idea and would love to see just random words so any sign could be created. 🙂

  16. Donna, awesome product especially conceived in your earlier calling and now brought to fruition in your new endeavor. I love the old style lettering graphics and numbers. Carry on and much thanks for continued inspiration.

    Ken

  17. Absolutely thrilled with your stencils. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see a Grainsack Collection. I hope I got my order in before you run out, because, I’m sure you will run out quickly! I would love to win! I akready subscribe to your blog and look forward to each and everyone of them. You have inspired me so much. I have 12 toolboxes in my garage for Christmas gifts because of you! Love it! Thanks so much for your genuine enthusiasum!

  18. One of my favorites would be Farmer’s Market. I attend ours here almost every Saturday while it is in season (April – December). I have been a long-time customer of some vendors there and I love it and them. You get to know people and that’s fun. I also frequent other farmers markets when I can. So that would be a fun sign for me you make and put in my kitchen. Thanks for posting this!

  19. I love that you are offering stencils…I had been waiting for that. Thankyou in advance..my hubby just finished making your twig/berry wreaths for my co-workers..He did a great job..used an artificial garland with tiny red apples..so excited that he is starting to enjoy what ‘we’ do too..now he’ll be on pinterest too…well, maybe not..
    Merry Christmas, Donna.
Shirley Born..I’m the one from Ontario that you wouldn’t answer in the summer because you likely thot I was a creeper…sorry..I just wanted to meet you and talk with you.

  20. I love these! Love signs and would love to see more collections! Coffee house type stuff would be good, peace, Parisian, etc. I am signed up for your regular newsletter and now the signs newsletter!!!

  21. Stencils are a great idea! Numbers, #,&,@, would be good too. I receive daily posts & signed up for stencil only updates. Would absolutely love to win the stencils!!!!

  22. How I can be so excited for someone I don’t even (really) know is beyond me…But I am!
You & Jennylynn talking your dreams was not a coincidence. I truly believe we meet everyone we’re ‘supposed’ to!
Congratulations…Being brave enough to say your dream (one of them!) out loud is to be admired. (and maybe a lesson for everyone who doesn’t…wink, wink)

p.s.I’m already a fan of Homestead House, the “original” milk paint makers…so much so, that when asked, theirs is the product I recommended to go into a store. (and, its doing pretty well!) That store has just introduced the Fusion paint as well!

  23. Will you be offering just alphabet letters so we could make up our own word combos?
Btw, loved your photos of Toronto and so glad you had fun in this amazing city.

  24. I would LOVE to see more collections, in “all of the above!” These are amazing!

I have a Silhouette machine, but it takes many tries to cut a clean stencil and I have just given up. I may not be able to afford many of your stencils, because the customers in my rural area won’t pay very much for anything, even handcrafted items!

  25. Can’t wait for more options!!!
Would love some grain sack ideas….
Signed up for the old sign newsletter too.

  26. I do get your newsletter. I found three three-foot red wooden arrows for $10.00 at a flea market. They’ve been waiting for me to do something with them. Love the stenciling!

  27. Love the sign stencils. I draw my own lettering for my old signs or barn wood, but when in a hurry, it would be so nice to have stencils! I love the idea of all kinds of vintage stencils for coffee, grain, tobacco, etc… Thank you for sharing and for having such a fun site to enjoy!!

  28. #1I just ordered two signs !!!!!!! I have loved your farmers market sign since I first saw it on Pinterest . I took the picture to a local craftsman and they wanted a 100.00 to make it. I bought the stencil and can now make my own!!!

  29. Love the stencils! I think numbers would be great, and also things that have to do with family. Thanks for the giveaway!

  30. I have signed up for your ‘Signs Only’ Newsletter and eagerly await the first (2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on) installment!

  31. I love everything you post so keep doing what you are doing! Everything is so beautiful!!! I already subscribe to your posts! Merry Christmas. Such an awesome giveaway! xo

  32. Would love the Farmers Market. Always get great ideas from you.
    Thanks!

Already signed up for all your posts and newsletter.

    Janet

  33. Oh my stars! You always have the best ideas and the best giveaways.

Grain sack, coffee, numbers – I want to see it all! Just keep up the good work. 🙂

Oh…and I subscribe to the daily blog posts and the newsletter.

  34. Hi Donna! I would love to win the Stencil Collection! I’ve been following your Blog and personal growth for awhile. You have given me inspiration, motivation and encouragement through my personal growth, all of which I am very grateful! Thank you! I was just looking into doing 4 art shows in Columbus, Ohio 2015 plus the shows I have done this year. I could really use another creative outlet and these sign stencils would make for a lot of fun! I would love an Antique sign!

  35. Oh Donna, congratulations, they are fabulous! There is nothing on the market (see how I used your stencil word there?) like these! I would love a coffee line of stencils as coffee signs are some of my most popular and they would be oh so much easier with a fabulous stencil.

  36. The stencils are so cute and really versatile. You have knocked it out of the park once again. Your sense of style and ability to take something so simple and make a beautiful vignette is amazing. It is what makes your site successful. Keep up the good work because you are inspiring to those of us who don’t have an ounce of style in our little finger! Thank you for all your hard work.

    Poohla

PS. I love getting your newsletter and your daily blog entry. I know it is your love and it shows.

  37. Super signs. Love the trees. Love the idea. How about wheat sheaf, grain sacks, carrots, garden signs… Swooshes, swirls, stuff eve me a non artistic person could do. Thanks for great posts.

  38. “Santa’s workshop” or “Santa’s Helper” for the side of a wooden tool box would be good for next year’s projects.

  39. I already am a faithful subscriber to your blog AND newsletter! And I LOVE the stencil idea! I love all your ideas and your giveaways! After the holiday is over (and I have a bit more fun money to spend on ME) I plan on purchasing your Farmers Market sign! Thanks for the opportunity to win!! I like coffee ideas, farm-themed projects and oh! how bout’ and French themed signs or grain sacks or any ol thing your creativity shouts out to you?

  40. Wow Donna! I am so in love with that arrow… just by itself without the lettering for every day decor AND with the Christmas lettering too! I think mix n’ match stencils are an AWESOME idea and I’d love to see more!

    Tania

  50. Love the stencils and the mix and match idea for the words. Would love to see some words that could be stacked mix and match, along with numbers. Basic words like love or home or joy. I am so inspired by the ways that you have used them.

  51. Love this! I’d like to see seasonal variations, like fresh produce for summer or pumpkins for sale for fall. Also, I love anything french, like boulangerie or charcuterie.

  52. LOVE these! We had a tree farm…AND a pumpkin farm a while back. I’m thinking entire alphabet & number stencils would be wonderful (but WHAT font??). People could do their family names, etc? Love the swoosh too. Different little graphics would be nice too. Garden, home, kitchen ware…etc. SO many options!!!

  53. I’ve been to nervous to try sign making without having a projector..like I see others use online. I love all of these…especially the Christmas tree sign. Thank you!

  103. I love the signage and I think it’s a great idea. I’d like a western theme to go with my stirrups and spurs I want to display. Great ideas.

Think I would like to see more Vintage signs and diy projects with an industrial flare.

  105. Wow, your stencils are wonderful. I would love to try a few of them. I think I would like to see stencils of the graphics on your stairs. I remember thinking I would like to have a stencil of some of those designs. I am already signed up for your daily emails and your newsletter. Thanks for the chance to win these great stencils.

  106. Donna, this is the coolest idea ever! I LOVE these stencils and it would be so neat the have more mix& match phrases! I’ve always thought your job doing the lettering was so creative and this would give your fans a small taste of it (with the hard part done!) great idea!

  107. I am so excited about the new stencils, it will make sign making so much easier for us non-professionals! Thank you! I love the tree farm stencil as family friends own a tree farm nearby.

  116. Donna, you know that I’m SO excited for you. This is going to be such a great thing!

The Tree Farm stencil is probably my favourite. I love it!

I’d love to be entered in the giveaway, so I’ll say that I’d love to see coffee-type stencils (like your coffee bar had on its top), or perhaps some stencils that are related to shipping/railway? Like maybe a CN Railway/shipping crate idea? Or an old HBC crate!?!?

Either or, whatever you do is amazing, lady. This is such a great thing!

  117. I am so proud for you and your new stencil collection. I know it is going to take off like a shot! I love your blog and have followed you now for a long time.
I would love some with scripture.
I already receive your weekly mailings and I just signed up to receive the sign email.
    Maybe I’ll win!
    Keep up the great work.

  118. I have been looking for farmer’s market signs like Fresh Corn, Ripe Strawberries, Farm Fresh Blueberries but can never seem to find the right font to use in lettering offered.
Now that you have mentioned it, grainsack and coffee would be wonderful too!

I have only made a sign using vinyl lettering and it turned out nice after some roughing up.
Would love to get started using stencils instead. Fantastic way to partner up in offering stencil mix and match.

  119. Just subscribed to blog posts and looking forward to following you here like I do in Pinterest. Love all the ideas! So creative!

  120. I’d love to see some real vintage type stencils — old school sign reproductions — stores etc. or old cars, rural signage.
I would love to enter to win your stencils and HH Paint. I live in Ontario and know you well. Was visiting at Lucketts this past summer.
Continued success and Happy Holidays! You are an inspiration.
