Rustic-modern arrow signs coffee station and art

Before February, I had the best of intentions to make something super cool and rustic for Valentine’s Day.

You may remember my rustic heart shown 3 ways in THIS post. I still have it hanging on my shop wall!

But… this year it didn’t happen. I got super involved working on the boy’s room makeover instead. Then boom! The reason for the season was over.

However, ON February 14th (yes, on that day… nothing like a deadline, huh?) I did have a brainstorm that I just HAD to play out into a project… in a way that could be used year around.

Leaving out the hearts, I focused on 3 different arrows instead…

I LOVE arrows, and it was for that reason I created this Arrow Kit stencil. Guess I needed a reason to play with it more!

So, being that the kit offered different ways to make different designs, I decided to try a few of them out. And I love the results!

Making this project was super fast and easy, however that was only half the fun… deciding what they’d ultimately do was the best part!

So lemme show you how I made the arrows, then share some finished projects below…

How-to:

1. Cut 3 (clean) reclaimed wood planks to desired size, determined by your chosen stencil design. Lightly sand all sizes.

2. (first board) Paint the lightest paint (Raw Silk) on the right. (see top board)

If you wish for a rustic take like I did, allow some board to show through… no need to distress with sanding this way.

3. (3rd board) After the first colour is dry to the touch, lay a sheet of paper on an angle to create a border. Coat out the left side of the plank with the darker paint (Putty mixed with a little Algonquin)

I wasn’t very fussy with placement… I just went by eye.

4. After your background colours are dry-to-the-touch, position the arrow stencil in the middle of one plank, and stencil in Ash.

How to stencil: Load the paint on your stencil brush, then remove most onto a rag until the brush is very dry to the touch to avoid paint bleed underneath the stencil. Tap the image with your paint until complete.

5. Design your other arrows… stencil the desired shaft first, then mix and match the arrow tips and feathers to achieve different designs!

Mixing & matching is easy, since all the stencil line thicknesses are identical. No matter what you choose, everything ends up beautifully designed and consistent with each other.

Brush cheat – I wound an elastic band around a wax brush to mimic a larger stencil brush. Worked great!

Here’s the three arrow designs I ended up with.

I then flipped the curvy arrow to point in the opposite direction of the other two.

Reveal

Aren’t they cute?!

While my arrows turned out super rustic, yours can look brand new if you use new wood and paint evenly. They’d even look lovely framed out in wood!

So now let’s play with them… whatever shall they do?

Arrow Art

This little arrow collection hung vertically offers a really nice impact!

The planks were screwed to the wall with one screw through each black shaft. You could add picture hangers behind the wood planks if desired.

Arrow Hooks

And here they are as coffee mug hooks for a productive take!

While I used black drywall screws to hang up the mugs (because my mug handles are so beefy), some small hooks could be installed instead.

I could see this idea used for keys, coats, towels, on the back of doors to hang clothing or robes, office supplies, hanging clipboards…

Just use them for whatever you need!

It was fun playing with arrows for a nice change! Now I have visions on some adventure and pillow designs using them…

Happy year-around Valentine’s Day to me! Now let’s really celebrate with a fresh hot coffee…

How would you use them?

  1. Now that’s a great stencil. Love the way you can interchange the arrowhead and the feathers at the back, with the two different shafts. So clever. I need to make something for my craft room to hang some of our DIY tools and these would work perfectly for that
