Industrial Shipping Crate Stamped shelving
I’m giving credit to this project due to a recent visit to my son’s place.
Call it a mom thing if you will, however after a quick glance around his room, I offered to do his laundry. ALL of it. Aren’t I the best mom ever?
Since my machines are much larger than his, I knew I could get the job done in a fraction of the time, so… my treat!
However once the laundry was clean and packed up into laundry baskets ready for the trip back home, I realized there just may be a reason for the disorganization. There really was no proper place for folded clothing as he didn’t have a dresser. Hmmm… what could a DIY mom do in a quick pinch a mere few hours before delivery?
The before
.
That’s when my eyes fell on my curb-side found shelving unit that was actually in my way. I was using it in my garage workshop and meant to give it a permanent home. But it appears it was destined to go elsewhere. And it would fit perfectly in his closet!
Thing is, my son doesn’t like old looking junk. So I debated on how I could do a quick revamp that still had some style but didn’t appear too brand new… the best of both of our worlds.
BAM! I could do an upscale reclaimed look!
So… I got to work, turning a typical put-together garage shelving unit into Industrial Shipping Crate Stamped shelving!

How-to:
.
Prepping the shelf
.
1. Clean, then sand the shelving unit from top to bottom.
2. Take apart, then paint the shelf supports with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black.
That description doesn’t quite fit the above picture does it? Nope it does not! I decided to share my error so you can avoid doing the same!
Since I wanted this project done yesterday, I attempted to paint the supports while the shelving was still assembled. This proved to slow me down… I had to cut in and be so careful, plus I couldn’t get all the nooks and crannies. It just ended up looking incomplete. And messy.
Dismantle shelf before treating
.
So I rummaged for a drill and bit and unassembled the unit so I could go quicker! And do it right.
Now THIS was the way to do it… if you have the choice.

How to add pallet markings
.
2. Stencil Shipping Crate Stamps stamps onto the bare wood shelving, with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black.
This part was the most fun of all! Selecting random and even parts of sayings, I scattered the placement of the stenciled images to resemble that they were made from a cut down shipping crate.
Deciding which shelf would go where helped me design the placement so it didn’t look ‘so planned’.
Adding hemp oil
.
3. Apply hemp oil to the wood shelving and painted supports.
Adding hemp oil to a project serves 3 purposes: It enhances wood or paint, acts as a protectant, and helps to wet-sand your project to a buttery smooth finish!
How to wet-sand with hemp oil
.
- Squirt hemp oil on wood or painted surface, then spread with a cloth.
- Lightly sand over top of the wet hemp oil with high grit sandpaper until smooth.
- Buff off excess hemp oil.
And ohhhhh my goodness. What an instant difference the addition of hemp oil made! The hemp oil added a low satin sheen to the painted areas which looks gorgeous!
Hemp oil can really change wood tone as well. I suggest to test an area to ensure it’s the look you desire.
Assembling the shelf
.
5. Assemble the shelving unit once dry, positioning shelving where desired.
It really helped to start the screws before attaching the shelves.
If you do this with Ikea shelving, you’ll likely have an allen wrench that comes with the kit. But if you use a drill bit, you’ll be able to work much quicker.
The finished shelf!
.
And there it was. Done! Complete! SO fast! So I allowed it to cure outdoors until it was dry.
But not before I quickly played with it a little…
Isn’t that the cutest thing?!
I love the idea of extra shelving you can lug outside to help with outdoor entertaining on an as-needed basis since these shelves are light enough to do just that.
In hindsight, I wish I had more time to stage it different ways (my mind was racing with ideas!) but it had to be loaded up quick.
And since I delivered it at night, no chance of a shot in my son’s closet. Perhaps in the future…
But if you put your visionary cap on, this shipping crate stamped shelving would look cute used as anything!
The only thing I don’t like about this shipping crate stamped shelving?
That it isn’t in my house.
I guess I’ll be making another…

we have to know …… did he like it????
ann
He said yes… when I asked. He doesn’t really take much notice on things like that. I think after all is said and done, whatever I make for him is really DIY therapy for me! haha
Oh donna..this is lovely! Yes I agree, bringing it up several notches from rustic to a nice smooth rich looking piece..awesome! ? ???
Great idea, and would work wonderfully in a closet. Even add a crate to a shelf for socks… Great as is, but like you said, so many possibilities. A piece that could be used anywhere. Your son was blessed, I am sure.
Thanks for sharing.
Donna,
Very nice!
It looks amazing! I was thinking it looked pretty good when it started but it looks amazing now! Well done!
I’m now living on Paros, a small greek island, in a tiny one bedroom apartment with a tiny patio front and back and my tools are still in storage. I lack space to work and am going crazy with the need to make things!!!
Soon I hope… fingers crossed…
Simply perfect!
That is THE coolest thing you’ve made yet! (And that’s saying a lot!) I absolutely love that! And you’re awesome to let it go. 😉 Even if your son isn’t appropriately impressed, I bet he’ll get TONS of compliments on it from visitors!
Beautiful transformation, hope your son appreciates it ?❤️? your hydrangea bush!
What a great solution for your son, and yes! You are a great mom doing all his laundry. I really like the stencils, and the finish Donna. I think I am going to add the same stencils to a display shelving un ti I have in my booth! Yay! Thanks for the inspiration!
Love, love this industrial shipping crate shelving!! Can you adopt me?? Your son is so lucky to have you do this shelving for him. The only thing I think would make it better would be to add feet of rollers on the bottom. You are my hero. God bless you.
Thanks Tina! And yes, the roller idea is a good one! These shelf feet were super narrow so I don’t think it would have worked, but I LOVE casters on the bottom of all furniture pieces where I can for sure! The look is rather cool too!
