This year’s stacked vintage crates Christmas mantel transpired by… fluke.

Do you remember my fall mantel with stacked vintage crates HERE?

When Christmas approached, I honestly didn’t want to take it all down. I loved the warmth from the old crates!

So before I gutted the fall mantel to start all over, I started adding a few touches to the mantel instead to try it out.

And that’s when the idea of a stacked vintage crates Christmas mantel came into play!

Which also secured this year’s Christmas theme… vintage!

One thing led to another… which led to the idea of stacking a few more vintage crates up to resemble a Christmas tree shape of sorts. So I got my crates but in a more festive way. Perfect!

I pick up crates from various sources… you can check out some of my favorite places to shop HERE

However one thing was missing.

The bottom crate didn’t have a saying while all the rest did, so I fixed that up by making one!

Rustic Merry Christmas sign how-to:

1. A cedar plank was stained in Fusion’s Stain and Finishing Oil in Cappuccino.

2. It was then stenciled in Fusion’s Coal Black with the saying Merry Christmas from the Christmas Crates stencil HERE.

3. The cedar plank was masking taped from the back, then stuck into place.

Boom! Smallest, fastest sign ever. And just right.

Decorating the mantel

Next up, I had these vintage Santa candles in my stash… I think I got them from an MCC thrift store! Aren’t they adorable? So I replaced the white ones from the fall mantel with these which proved to be perfect!

I had the wrought iron candle sticks from a few years ago and don’t remember where from. It could have been Winners / Homesense. (like Home Goods in USA)

But one more thing was needed…

I head down the road in search of some real evergreen branches gathered along one of our nearby country roads. I do this every December after a good strong wind storm and I’ve never been disappointed yet!

So the cute kitschy little Santa candles were lit…

…and a few fresh green real evergreen branches were sprayed with a little faux snow to chime in with this year’s Christmas tree HERE…

Oh! And that cute faux wreath is from Hobby Lobby!

Then the stockings I already had on hand were hung…

Which made this year’s stacked vintage crates Christmas mantel complete!

It’s cozy, antique, with just enough stuff to make it interesting.

I did have visions for grain sack stockings, however I couldn’t find the roll of linen I had… I was even going to break out the sewing machine! So I will likely save that brainstorm for next Christmas.

Because in all honesty, this works.

It just screams cozy, comfort and all things warmth!

And that truly is the magic of old wood… and of course, Christmas.

What do you think of this year’s mantel? What do you have on yours this year?

  1. I like to decorate around the things I have because I hate moving it all. Especially my mantel which is full all year of a collection of vintage hammered tin. I need to think of how to use the tin in place for next year. Oh Christmas tree oh Christmas tree, how pretty are your stacked crates.

  2. OMG! I’m so jelly over your mantel (like how I tried to use a young person’s phrase? ;)) It is so simple, but so elegant and vintage – just beautiful!

  3. The crate mantel for Christmas does work Donna. And the Santa candles are kinda like the icing on the cake. And thank goodness every year you can find the evergreen branches along the road. I love the evergreens.
