Oh how I adore gardening season! I just have the best time coming up with upcycled projects that flip into charming garden art! And today is a fun one!

I had an area on my garden fence that was a little bare… so I decided to make something super cool as a focal point, but with a flower decor theme!

thrift store decor team event

Today I’m teaming up with my creative friends to share an updated item you can typically find at a thrift store! Be sure to visit everyone’s super original projects linked at the bottom of this post!

Gathering up some old ceiling fan blades is the key for this one… nearly any will do! However I do have some tips on how I chose mine so you can achieve a similar effect if desired! But you can’t do this wrong. Gather up your blades, arrange as desired and create the cutest flower yard art landscape in the land!

Here’s what I did:

Supplies I used:

8 white ceiling fan blades I used 4 flat and 4 attached to ceiling fan hardware

Small round wooden cutting board

Thin twine

Black wide headed screws (Truss head wood screws)

Chunk of black rubber hose

Old licence plates in green

Bosch cordless drill

Collect ceiling fan blades

1. Gather up some old ceiling fan blades.

I landed my ceiling fan blades from a generous neighbour. However I suggest to check free facebook sites, thrift stores, the curb, or pick up a really cheap intact ceiling fan.

I selected 4 flat white ceiling fan blades, and 4 white blades still attached to fan hardware so they would ‘twist’ a little.

However you can’t do this wrong! You could also consider using an entire ceiling fan unit as-is so it still spins! Or paint the ceiling fan blades in any colour you choose.

You may also wish to coat the ceiling fan blades with a weather protectant of some type for outdoor longevity. I spot-painted some on the flat blades where the screw holes were. However I found the rest of the blades had a nice protective coating of some kind already, so I left the rest as-is.

Choose a flower center item

2. Decide on a flower center.

I considered using a coconut fiber basket liner with black cage attached from the dollar store, but I settled on a small round cutting board I landed at a thrift store instead! But anything round in a decent scale can work.

3. With cutting board good-side-down, arrange 4 flat ceiling fan blades to the back, then predrill holes and attach with short black screws from the back.

If you are using ceiling fan blades with just the hardware attached, you can skip this step.

Installing fan blade flower to garden fence

4. Attach the assembled flower to the fence.

Start screwing into the middle of the flower center with a long screw, then position and screw the flower to the fence where desired. You can now rotate the flower so it’s perfectly straight.

I arranged the flower to be off-center to my cable reel potting bench so the flow of garden features felt right.

Adding twine string art to flower center

5. Screw in just the tips of wide-headed black short screws around the perimeter of the cutting board, evenly spaced.

6. Use thin twine to create a string art flower center.

Tie some thin twine to one screw, then thread the twine from screw to opposite screw until all the screws are utilized to create a string art flower center.

Isn’t it cool?! The layered twine texture offers a pretty unique twist to my ceiling fan blade flower yard art!

Adding a garden hose as a flower stem

7. Use a small chunk of rubber hose to create a flower stem.

I had a section of black rubber hose left over from doing a hose repair. A screw was inserted into the start of the hose, then I screwed it near the flower head, and gently curved the hose in a free-flowing shape, while attaching it with screws along the way.

I suggest to screw on the hose only until secure, while not denting the hose.

Seriously, if you have a super long hose you don’t need the entire length of, get THIS hose repair kit and cut off a chunk! It worked amazing and even stood up to pressure washing! I share how to do this repair in my instagram stories under HOSE FIX.

Using green license plates for flower leaves

8. Add some rusty junk something-or-others to resemble leaves along the flower stem.

I positioned green license plates along the hose to mimic flower leaves. Love the punch of graphics as well! If your plates weren’t of value to you, I think cutting them into leaf shapes with tin snips would make this extra-level cool!

And my upcycled ceiling fan blade flower yard art is complete! I LOVE the punch of interest this flower art adds to this garden space, which certainly fills up a bare spot on the reclaimed wood garden fence nicely!

Luckily I had just previously cleaned up and resealed my cable reel potting bench and arranged coffee can herbs along the top. Perfect timing!

I think the large flower adds a great focal point in between the old window cold frame and cable reel potting bench!

Love how the white ceiling fan blades really pop against the woodsy garden fence too! However imagine painting the blades for more of a sunflower effect, or to create whatever flower you wish! I just got lucky landing white blades which resemble a daisy, which is one of my fav garden flowers!

Fun, easy, and it cost me nothing to make!

    • Thanks Sue! I just visited your decadent garden mantel… wowsa! You could totally make your own dragon flies with some so your husband could get his back… but honestly, I love it the way you have it. Maybe HE can have some new ones instead… haha! I had fun with this!

  1. I just love upcycling and decorating with fan blades, Donna, but I’ve never used them in the garden. This is genius! Now I’m on the hunt for more fans!

  2. Donna, this looks SO GOOD!!! I love seeing ceiling fan blades repurposed and the pop of white against the reclaimed wood is #chefskiss.

    • Thanks Kristin! That was an 11th hour decision… brought me right back to my elementary string art days! haha! Gotta love when you surprise yourself and in this case, I think it worked!

  3. Donna,

I love your new fan blade flower yard art! Using the two different kinds of blades really works great. But my favorite part is the twine! I never would have thought to add the center cutting board.

Your garden is so sweet and so well put together.

  4. Oh my G! Seeing you in person was so nice, Donna! Now I really feel like I know you. You did an excellent video tutorial!!! First the string art blew me away, but then the hose…flippin genius. This will rust nicely, too!! I mean that for real, lol. Great job as always!! PINNING!
