Supplies you’ll need
- Reindeer Feed Stencil from HERE
- Grain Sack Stripe stencil G5L from HERE
- 20″ grainy pillow covers (the cover I used is no longer avail)
- Fusion Mineral Paint’s Fort York Red & Coal Black
- dome-tipped stencil brush
I filmed the tutorial part of this project which you can watch below, however here’s a brief written description as well.
1. Use a pillow cover of choice.
I love the Jofrid pillow covers from IKEA. (no longer available) They have a textured surface which resembles a vintage grain sack.
2. Insert something waterproof inside the pillow. I used a plastic bag.
3. Position stencil in the centre of the pillow.
4. Load the stencil brush with paint of choice, remove most paint onto a rag until brush feels ‘dry’.
5. Tap or swipe brush along the stencil until desired effect is achieved

6. Add grain sack stripes in red to each side of the pillow design.
There are 6 grain sack stripe stencils to choose from. I used G5L for this pillow for a subtle effect. It ended up looking so perfect!

The finished Reindeer Feed Christmas pillow!

Didn’t the Reindeer Feed pillow turn out amazing?!
I love how it has a weathered appearance, which is exactly the look I was going for!
The red stripes add just the right amount of ‘Christmas’ and vintage appeal without taking away from Reindeer Feed.
Adding Grain Sack Stripes really add such a vintage timeless look to any design.
Because the Reindeer Feed stencil was designed to be a grain sack, it is positively perfect for a fabric project, just as if you repurposed a real grain sack!
Which makes the most adorable Christmas throw pillow in the land.

So… let’s make a Reindeer Feed Santa Sack next!
Burlap Reindeer Feed Santa Sack
You know about the Christmas Santa sack craze right about now, yes?
Basically put, a santa sack is a reusable bag of sorts to wrap presents with.
I love the concept! There’s no need to keep buying endless rolls of Christmas paper if you have a cute bag handy!
So I decided to try my hand at my own version of a Christmas Reindeer Feed Santa Sack… but maybe one you may find buried in the back of Santa’s reindeer stalls…
How’s that for repurposed authenticity?
And… made with a pre-sewn sandbag from the local hardware store that cost a whoppin’ $1.50!
Use a sandbag
.
Sandbags are so cheap, and of course, ready made which makes them fabulous for repurposing into other projects. I’ve used them for a Christmas burlap coffee pillow HERE, for various other everyday pillows HERE, and for covering a bulletin board HERE.
I mean, for around $1.50 for a small 16″ x 24″, and about $2.50ish for a large, those are pretty cheap project supplies!
Plus I love easy projects that look cool.
So let’s make this!
Supplies I used:
.
Reindeer Feed stencil from HERE
Grain Sack Stripe Stencil G4L from HERE
1 small burlap sandbag. Mine measures 16″ x 24″.
Something waterproof to slip inside the sandbag (I used a garbage bag)
Red and black paint (I used Fusion’s Fort York Red and Coal Black)
Chip brush and stencil brushes
How-to:
.
1. Place something waterproof inside the sandbag to avoid the paint bleeding through to the other side.
I used a black plastic bag.
2. Position the Grain Sack Stripe stencil in the middle of the burlap sandbag, then attach with masking tape.
With long even strokes, paint over the stencil. If the stencil moves around, use your hand to hold the stripes in place as you work.
There’s a mini video tutorial at the end of this post so you can view the method I used.
Now that is one gorgeous grain sack stripe… in seconds!
It really does resembles a real coffee bean sack pretty closely.
So let’s add some graphics…
3. Once the grain sack stripe is dry to the touch, position the Reindeer Feed stencil in the middle of the sand bag, but a little closer to the bottom, to leave room for tying up the bag on top.
4. Stencil in Coal Black with a stencil brush.
Learn more about how to stencil from THIS post, or watch the short video at the bottom of this post.
5. White snowflakes were also stenciled in around the deer head.
It turned out perfectly cute and rustic, just as I intended!
Grain Sack gift wrapping ideas
.
Because this burlap sandbag is a little transparent, wrapping gifts in brown paper or newspaper prior to stuffing the bag would be ideal.
I filled this Christmas Reindeer Feed Santa Sack with some brown paper for the photo, then gathered the top together, tied with raffia, added an ornament and called it done!
Without even dusting off my sewing machine. Now that’s a win!
Well, I really wanted a rustic authentic looking Christmas Reindeer Feed Santa Sack this round, and I do believe I got it!

It’s currently sitting on top of a vintage sleigh tucked in front of the Flocked Christmas tree… and it’s perfectly adorable. My Christmas theme this year is Antiques, so this Reindeer Feed Santa Sack fits right in!

This is so cute, love it.
Thanks Anita! I’m kinda stoked how authentic it turned out… gotta love a new old looking thing! haha
This turned out so cute! Do all hardware stores carry such sacks? I’m going to have to check this out!
Hey Teddee! I have not been successful in finding sandbags at big box stores. I frequent a small independent hardware store for mine. I hope you find some!
Something else that I want to try is making my own out of painter’s drop cloth. Love the texture!
So so cute! I just love it! Am going to check out the sandbag source in our area Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome! They are an amazingly cheap crafting resource for certain!
Donna,
Love the idea. Your mind is always thinking as mine is too.
Happy Holidays!
I love everything you do and this is no exception…I know what I will be going to buy this weekend at my local hardware store this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Oh how perfectly adorable. It always amazes me how you and your stencils take something that plain and boring to a whole new level.
