Today was deemed a family day, so I didn’t have time to work on anything home bound. And that doesn’t make for very interesting blog material…
Something I’ve learned in the past 31 days of writing so much is to ensure there are pictures stored up, so a new story can emerge any time. I’m on it!
So I scanned through my SD card and found this tutorial I forgot to blog about. See? It works!
I could have been all clever and not told you the part of having no content, but this 31 day thing is about how to do what we gotta do, even when the chips are down. So, you get the plain truth this round.
Anyway…
When revamping the ‘ol workshop you’ve heard way too much about at this point, I had these two newish shelves fresh from the curb.
But.. they needed a little junkin’ up.
I first painted the shelf with MMSMP Typewriter.
Then the fun part came…
All the straight edges were gouged out. I wanted it rough, like the shelf had been discarded and chucked in one deep bin at the dump on a blustery fall day with crispy leaves swirling all about.
Can you feel the adrenaline hit of the find yet?! You’re cold, with frozen knuckles gripping an ice cold garbage can as you dump your trash over the edge, but THERE IT IS. Instant Hawaii!
“Discovery of no ordinary shelf.”
Novel material here… book deal please?
I’m trying to pump up a boring shelf into an exciting event. How am I doing?
Anyway, every straight edge got hit with a hammer and chisel to create… well, a mess. A light sanding took care of splinter material.
Here’s why I painted first. Chipping away at the wood after painting simply exposed more wood.
A little MMSMP antique wax enriched the wood edges and gave the paint a little lustre.
My no book deal No Ordinary Shelf then got mounted to the reclaimed wood workshop wall, with a branch added for twine and tape. It’s perfect!
And all the workshop gear lived happily ever after. 🙂
I just love how you think outside the box and this was a great way to relieve some stress….using a hammer. I might just try that myself! Ha!
Great distressing or maybe harassment of an innocent board! Haha. It turned out great and who cares if it happened a little while back. You definitely deserve a book. Just make an e-book like I’m going to do! Ha.
You make me smile, and I love your attitude. We live in a throw away world. Good to know that you can give new purpose to old things!
It’s funny you should post this, Donna. Last night I was making a sign on reclaimed wood, but the wood didn’t really show much wear. I kept thinking it needed a good banging up to make it look better! I love the addition of the branch to hold your tape…you’re so junky smart! 🙂
Love it! Book and movie deal in one!
I love it – junkin up a new looking shelf. I was recently working on a wooden fireplace screen for my MIL. I love the worn look and junked look, she doesn’t. It was very very very hard for me to just let the plain paint dry and then not touch it after that. To each his own I guess. I’ll take mine beaten up, I mean I’ll take mine with “character”! (I did manage to add some of my dried hydrangeas to a wreath she could hang on the fireplace screen – so I guess I did manage to sneak some character in there!)
Cute video!!!!!
It finally has a purpose! I just love happy endings. And I love your shelf.
Gave that new old shelf a great do over, looking very rustic for your workshop. What did you do with other shelf?
Doggone it just remembered I forgot to get nice long shelf at thrift store today. Maybe it’ll be there when I go to vote tomorrow. I’ll go see if shelf there first, of course.
The black paint on yours before you tortured it gave it more rustic look. You sure did beat heck out of that shelf. Did it feel good?
Happy Halloween and weekend
We have beaten many a piece of wood to “age” it. haha I love the look of old. No one has to know it is new. 😉
LOVED THE VIDEO!!
