Rustic Fresh Coffee sign that hangs coffee mugs

I have a confession.

Up until 2 days ago…

I had this snowflake hanging coffee mug station behind my stove.

This was part of my Christmas tour! Egads guys.

Maybe I should have left it and just said I was 6 months early…

Well, I caught it accidentally in an instagram story not long ago and oh my goodness… funny how we don’t see stuff when we see it everyday.

So over the weekend, I finally did something about it!

I’ve been wanting to work on my kitchen anyway, however with a pending summer getaway, I’ll wait until I get back.

However, I knew I could certainly manage a cute coffee sign until then!

And boy was I right. This one went up FAST! And it’s as cute as can be and is also super productive hanging up my fav coffee mugs.

I’m kinda all over my coffee. I love coffee signs anyway and you may remember this coffee-themed TV tray I covered in the same design. This compact stencil gave me the perfect opportunity to give it another go in my kitchen this round. And I’m completely smitten!

So let’s go over some tips on how I made this, then show you some staging ideas!

Supplies I used:

2 reclaimed fence planks

Fresh Coffee stencil from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils HERE

Fusion Mineral Paint’s Casement and Coal Black

(find a local Fusion retailer from HERE)

Palm sander

S-hooks

Stencil brush

1. Cut, then lightly sand 2 reclaimed wood fence planks.

I always have a stash of fence planks on hand, and these proved to be perfect for what I had in mind.

Two planks got cut down to desired length, then received a light standing with a palm sander to finish them off. I didn’t get fancy with the grit. I just used medium and called it done. These would be rustic anyway.

2. Paint the the two boards with Fusion’s Casement in a half hazard way so they look weathered without sanding. 

And here’s where I (sorda) messed up.

I got so hung up on sharing the sign making process on Insta Stories, I forgot to take pictures of a few steps!

But no worries… the short video is at the bottom of this post which shares lots of great distressing tips as well.

3. After the white paint dries, stencil the Fresh Coffee stencil into the centre of the boards with Fusion’s Coal Black.

Because I planned for my sign to be on separate boards, I did a little special placement of Fresh Coffee to make sure my design worked once the boards had a gap. (included in the video)

The black on rustic white turned out totally perfect! Perfect for a little freshen up in the kitchen.

But first… playtime in the photo studio!

Isn’t it the cutest?!

My photo studio has exceptional natural light during the day, so this is where I love to play with setups before putting the projects to actual work in my home.

How to mount the sign

The boards were mounted to the wall with screws through the sign, over top of a board and batten treatment, which left a space behind the signs in order to hang the S-hooks.

Tip: place screws where there is black paint so they don’t appear obvious.

You could add chunks of wood as spacers behind the boards to achieve the same effect.

My neighbour Gerry said I could ‘borrow’ a few flowers any time I desired some for a photo shoot, so I ran right over and scooped these peonies up! Aren’t they wonderful?

I love the look and functionality of the sign. And of course, a smattering of cute white mugs doesn’t hurt!

A few of these were made in my pottery class!

And after playtime, I barely took the last shot when I took everything apart to put it to work in my kitchen.

Bye bye snowflakes…

Hello rustic Fresh Coffee sign! It really freshened things up!

Note: I rarely use the two back burners of my stove so the sign placement doesn’t concern me. However please use caution when placing wood behind a gas stove, as this actually breaks safety code.

While this is far from a kitchen redo, I’d say this was a really fun start!

Besides… it’s coffee time anyway now…
