Why use stencils?
Stencils are premade templates that make sign making or decor designing easy!
For DIY signs, the most intense work is in the design process. However a ready-made mylar stencil offers everything that’s ready to use. All you need to do is decide what to make, then just add paint!
What kind of stencils are best for wood?
Mylar stencils LOVE reclaimed wood.
Because most of my rustic Christmas signs are made on wood, I like to stencil with mylar stencils. You simply position the stencil in place, then stencil the images with paint, no matter what condition the wood is in underneath.
Mylar stencils aren’t sticky unless you add stencil adhesive. You can either using masking tape to hold the stencil into position, or hold the stencil with your hand until stenciling is complete.
So if your preference is creating with bare or reclaimed wood sign decor with a farmhouse Christmas sign twist, using mylar stencils makes it very easy!

How to stencil DIY Christmas signs with flawless results
Not sure how to stencil, or do you find you get paint bleed?
Stenciling is actually very easy! The main key is to ensure your paint-loaded stencil brush feels dry. Try these steps:
- Position the stencil onto your project with masking tape.
- Load the stencil brush with paint.
- Remove most of the paint off the brush until the brush tip feels dry.
- Tap or swirl the paint through the stencil for the desired effect.
Additional stencil tips:
- Avoid using lots of paint as this will cause paint to bleed under the stencil.
- Using less paint with more coats is better. Leave the stencil in place and stencil again if more coverage is desired.
- If repositioning the stencil, ensure the back is dry before moving it.
- Distress your painted images by using sandpaper after your image is dry.

These are all amazing Donna! I love the new collection; it’s got the wheels turning :).
Well that’s good news! And thanks Sara!
❤️❤️❤️??????
AMAZING!! Just fantastic Donna!
Thank-you Kim! Time to get out the paint and start playing!!
I love, love, love everything in this post and especially the little white chippy paint trees. Before our old barn, chicken coop, and granary were bulldozed to make room for a new street, I saved a huge pile of the old wood. I had two rustic/vintage rummage sales in October and sold so many things I’m regretting, but still have crates of old rusty metal pieces so your posts, and especially this one, are an inspiration to use what I have. Thank you!
Damn, I wish shipping to South Africa wasn’t so crazy expensive. There are so many of your gorgeous stencils I’d love to play with, Donna.
