As you may already be aware, I personally am no stranger to using reclaimed wood for most of my DIY projects, as well as for fall with this unique Sunflower sign with a shelf.

One of my most fun fall decorations to date is this Buffalo Checked Pumpkins in a wagon sign brought to 3D life with salvaged additions!

I just love the look of all reclaimed wood made into anything!

However this round, I desired something super easy, rustic and neutral to decorate with for fall that blended in with my love for pallet-style.

So grabbing a wood post from the workshop and then a quick wander over to the grapevine bush, these easy wood pumpkins with Pumpkin Patch sign project came right to life!

And boy does it tell a fall story well. This fall project is simple, cute, easy to make and will fit almost anywhere thanks to its compact size, making it easy to store too!

So if wooden pumpkin decor appeals to you, this DIY project perfect for fall, Halloween or Thanksgiving decorating will be right up your alley!

How to build DIY wooden pumpkins from square posts

1. Cut 3 different lengths from a square post to create different pumpkin shapes.

2. Lightly sand with a palm sander or sandpaper to remove any splinters.

These wooden pumpkins will be left unfinished, however would look equally adorable painted orange craft paint, or different colors, or any wood stain tone desired.

Craft stores are also a good resource for small crafting details.

Add pumpkin stems with grapevine branches

3. Gather grapevine branches and the squiggly parts as well. They’re the best part! Then break into stump sized pieces.

4. Drill holes into the tops of the wood blocks just large enough to allow the grapevine stumps to fit.

5. Insert grapevines and a squiggly branch into the drilled hole to create pumpkin stumps.

Hot glue the branches to the scrap wood pumpkins if desired, however mine fit tightly enough to leave as-is.

Aren’t those branches just perfect as pumpkin stems?! And cute as the unfinished pumpkins are as-is, they’re about to get a whole lot cuter! Which you’ll soon see.

But first, let’s whip up a Pumpkin Patch sign next.

Pumpkin Patch FJ99S – Small stencil

How to stencil a mini pumpkin patch wood sign

6. Cut a plank of wood that fits the lettering on Pumpkin Patch FJ99S – Small stencil.

7. Position the stencil over the plank, then attach with masking tape.

8. Load stencil brush with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Chocolate furniture paint, then remove most paint onto a rag until brush feels dry.

9. Tap or swirl paint through the stencil to achieve the desired effect.

Decorate the Pumpkin Patch sign with rustic twine

10. For added rustic detail, wrap some thicker jute twine around both ends of the sign!

Cut the jute twine with scissors to the length desired, then wind the twine around each end of the sign board as many times as desired, securing it by tying a knot.

I used a thicker jute twine that was separated to thin it out a little. Love the squiggly look it gives off!

Attach a sign post to the Pumpkin Patch sign with a Kreg Jig

11. Cut a smaller plank to the desired length that would be suitable for your sign. This will become your sign post.

12. Drill the back of the sign post with two pocket holes using a Kreg Jig pocket hole maker

The post can be attached by screwing it to the back of the sign as well if you don’t have a pocket hole maker.

How to use a Kreg Jig pocket hole maker

A Kreg Jig is a tool that helps create pocket holes in wood, that offer very strong wood joins. If you don’t yet have a Kreg Jig in your workshop, I absolutely highly recommend adding one! My own projects look so much more professional when I build with a pocket hole jig, and it’s so easy to use!

Create a stand for the Pumpkin Patch sign

.

13. Attach the sign post to the sign board by using screws through the pocket holes.

14. Then attach the signpost to the back of the largest pumpkin by pre-drilling holes using screws.

Since the sign needs some kind of support for it to stand, I decided to attach the sign post to the back of one of the pumpkins instead of building a separate stand.

It worked perfectly and proved to be a super sturdy way to mount a sign!

So let’s add some details to the pumpkins next!

The leaves were gathered outdoors while they were wet. Once brought inside the house to dry overnight, they even retained either vibrant fall colors!

Hot glue the leaves into place if desired.

Will the wood pumpkins last outdoors?

.

These unfinished wood pumpkins will last outdoors If you use treated wood posts like I did, or choose to paint your wood pumpkins with an outdoor durable paint.

The Pumpkin Patch sign is made from a cedar fence plank so it should also be safe outdoors.

However any of the wood could be further protected using an outdoor wood protectant of some kind.
