It seems like just yesterday I was sharing the garden shed during summer with all the flowers in full bloom!
Take the summer tour with porch tutorial HERE
Summer shed version
Here’s what the garden shed looked like not even an entire month ago! With a new front porch, newly painted front door and trim, planters and rusty junk accents. Isn’t it the cutest?!
However with Christmas decorating fast approaching, I couldn’t miss sharing what transpired with the shed during fall!
Fall shed version
So here is what the garden shed looks like today, on this fine fall day! What a difference, huh? And whew… glad I painted that trim with a fresh coat of black paint. The roofline peeking through is looking sharp!
I nearly didn’t get this fall decor shoot in though.
After that summer photo shoot, in a matter of days, the weather started to change. I watched as the grapevines slowly started to change over, meaning, I had a matter of days to add some fall porch ideas because once those leaves start to change, they drop quickly!
But it needed pumpkins or gourds or maybe even colorful mums. However with no town runs scheduled, I procrastinated.
Then a drive to a neighbour’s farm yesterday where they offered me a ton of oak tree branches for an upcoming project had me also bringing some pumpkins and gourds home! It was indeed our lucky day.
So today I didn’t delay. The happy white, green and orange pumpkins got a quick clean, the bird feeder got refilled, and the shed was ready for it’s fall 2024 photos!
Right before the last fall leaf dropped. Whew!
So today I’m taking you for a fall porch decor tour of the shed, along with sharing easy outdoor fall porch decor ideas, so you too can pull together an extra cozy entrance filled with fall charm using just natural elements!
Many of these same principals can also be used for Christmas decorating. I’ll be sure to share that version once it transpires too!
Regardless, here’s how to get instant fall curb appeal nearly without spending a dime… however I did a little hunting online so you can pick up the odd pieces to help enhance what you have!

How to build a front porch for a garden shed
Add a front porch
If you are decorating a shed, I’d LOVE to suggest to add a front porch! It’s actually fairly simple to build yourself. See how I built this simple porch HERE
The front porch on the shed is SO epic! It’s been really working well with falling bird seed from up above. A quick hose down and it’s as clean as can be again. The porch really gives the garden shed so much more emphasis.
However, I have to admit, there’s nothing like adding fall porch decor to it! It just provides a really nice platform for decorating, planters, or otherwise.
Utilize pruned tree branches
So many prune their trees this time of year, so keep your ears and eyes open for an opportunity to enjoy some freshly cut branches to make an epic mini outdoor porch tree of your own! Large branches are instant fillers that make quite a presence! I do the same with large evergreen branches that are wind blown as well.
If you wish for the leaves to hopefully stay intact, you can try propping them in a bucket of water. Or simply allow the leaves to fall, then use the branches for winter decorating.
Above is the bundle of oak tree branches fresh off the tree. The neighbours were pruning their oak tree just yesterday so I had tons of branches to bring home! I’m now patiently waiting for the leaves to fall off so I can use just the branches for an upcoming winter project.
However, why waste those gorgeous leaves? They really are stunning, so I hauled a few around the shed for extra fillers. They look like a potted tree inside that galvanized ring (here’s another way I used it during summer)! Perfect.
I think I’m going to try pressing some of those oak leaves, because they are so pretty.

Collect tree stumps as risers or benches
I love how this little medley of stumps, pumpkins and clay pots played out, with plenty of leaves for good measure! But let’s focus on those cutie pie tree stumps!
Personally, I see plenty of signs along the road all the time, ‘stumps for free!’ This is an ideal time of year to prune or chop down trees, so if you keep your eyes open, you may land some!
I use various stumps at different levels, which add height and interest and can also be utilized as a bench! One stump usually holds a tray to catch bird seed (see how HERE), however today the pumpkins get centre stage.
Stumps can be super heavy, so you may even want to consider adding castors under yours if they are under cover. But they sure are cool and blend in so well when decorating outdoors.

Bring out your terra cotta pots
As you can see, this fall porch decor is very casual and simple with a mix of clay terra cotta pots, pumpkins and leaves. That’s pretty much it!
The terra cotta pots add that cinnamon-red warmth fall delivers so well, plus they can act as risers for pumpkins.
The smattering of different types and sizes of both pots and pumpkins really did the trick! With these natural outdoor fall decorations, they won’t easily deteriorate, plus you don’t even miss flowers or a fall wreath.
Use real fallen leaves
Don’t be too quick to rake up all your leaves! I like to leave a stash of leaves under my grapevines so I can use them elsewhere for fall decorating when I’m ready for them.
Natural leaves are just the real deal. Yes, they will deteriorate, just as nature intended. Or blow away. But when they do sit around vignettes and displays, you can’t get a bigger fall presence than a smattering of real leaves strewn about!
I first hosed down the porch, then scattered the leaves amongst the other decor so it just looks natural and full.
It’s also nice to keep a few faux leaves to decorate with for indoors as well, so they last. However I have gathered perfect outdoor leaves to dry indoors so I can use the real thing there too.
To dry real leaves indoors, simply press inside a book. Or allow them to curl naturally for different looks.

Teamed up with the overhead sumac tree, there’s certainly no shortage of leaves to decorate with in this yard!
Tip: I don’t rake up leaves anymore. I just run my lawnmower over them with the mulcher. They not only completely disappear, they help mulch and feed the lawn.
Let’s take a wander along the side of the shed now and see what’s new.
Here’s the summer version of the side of the shed for reference. Check out how deep toned the sedum is now! It’s like sedum knows to be bright and happy with summer flowers, then go deep for fall. Incredible.

Create a bird feeding station to help winter the birds
The bird feeding station just looks so cute even as just a sign! It’s a nice theme that chimes in well with the bird feeder.

I also had NO idea how gorgeous oak tree leaves are! What a treat to be able to enjoy them, even if for a short while. I think I’ll stage a few indoors too!
And although the bird feeding station was empty (oops), there’s plenty of food for the birds in the feeder…
… plus in the planter box.
Consider planting a Mt. Ash tree to decorate with and feed birds
I snipped some Mountain Ash branches from our tree out front, so my little bird guests can feast on them as well. Which also adds a nice pop of fall colour.
Take this fall foliage tour of the ferns and the yard HERE
This mountain ash is a stunning tree during this time of year, but it does make a mess when those berries start to drop. The birds feed off of it all winter long though, so I’m glad it’s somewhat useful.
It’s a beautiful tree, but if you’re playing around with getting one to feed birds, I’d suggest to plant it in a backyard away from neighbour’s windows and nearby walkways so you don’t have to worry about the clean up and drunk birds.
Consider planting a grapevine
A star of my backyard is of course the grapevine, which grows all along the fence and the shed roof. I love the look!
A grapevine provides a ton of privacy during summer.
Then at the end of summer, you’ll get to snack on grapes!
But once fall hits, you get this vibrant display!
And once the leaves drop, you get the twiggy version that looks so rustic and cool during winter! Grapevines are a total win in my book!
And the twiggy winter version of the shed is right around the corner, you just wait!
But for now, I get to enjoy my home’s curb appeal with this delightful fall and Halloween view for a spell!
There’s really no need to spend a ton of money for fall decorating. I hope these these simple and natural ideas can inspire some fresh ideas for your own fall front porches!

Fabulous! I love every little thing.
Love the way you decorated your cute shed porch. Thanks for sharing, now I have inspiration for my porch on the side of my garage.
I love your shed! The porch is a wonderful addition and the grapevine, especially this time of year, is gorgeous. I live in an apartment, but have a good-sized recessed balcony that I decorate with numerous pots filled with faux greenery, leaves, berries and florals depending on the season. In the winter I also throw faux fur throws over a matching wooden chair and settee, both thrift store finds. The balcony really becomes an extension of my living room and I’ve removed any window treatments on my third-floor slider to give me full visual access. I’m just getting ready to transition to winter greenery and am looking forward to it.
