Learn how to make an easy pumpkin patch sign for fall decorating that’s easy to customize! Grab your plank of wood and try these easy fall signs using stencils!
When October rolls around, your thoughts will no doubt be all about rounding up tickets to the local corn maze, catching a hay ride, and checking out an abundant pumpkin patch or two.
And then there’s fall decorating with corn stalks, gourds, and of course pumpkins!
But one thing I love to make every fall is some kind of fall sign. Fall signs don’t have to be complicated. In fact, there’s one fall stencil I tend to gravitate towards time and time again, because all you need is one plank of wood to make it look great!
So I decided to create a new fall sign idea teaming it up with another stencil. And it turned out so cute!
This neutral pumpkin patch fall sign looks great for fall decorating indoors or out! It would be perfect for a fall mantel, or as a front porch sign surrounded with loads of pumpkins!
As it stands, I took mine over to the garden shed, which I’ll share more of below.
But let’s make this cute and easy pumpkin patch sign first!
Since the sign was so easy to make, I decided to make 3 instead of just one. I’d like to try my hand at selling some premade stenciled signs locally so I decided this was a good opportunity to try it out.

Where to find pumpkin patch stencils
.
Two fall stencil designs from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils were teamed up to create this fun and easy Pumpkin Patch sign!
The pumpkin graphic from Fall Produce Graphics was the perfect size to paint pumpkins on this sized sign. It’s a handy little stencil to have if you love to incorporate delicious food into your fall decorating.

Preparing the wood planks
.
1. Cut a cedar fence plank to the desired length, then one side at two 45 degree angles to achieve an arrow tip.
2. Lightly sand the entire plank with an orbital sander.
3. Position the Pumpkin Patch stencil and pumpkin from Fall Produce Graphics onto the plank surface to determine desired positioning.
4. Secure Pumpkin Patch with masking tape (if desired, I just held mine), then stencil the image in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black.

Stenciling a pumpkin
.
5. Position the pumpkin graphic into place, then stencil the stem in black, then the pumpkin in Fusion’s Raw Silk.
Isn’t this fall sign the cutest?! I’ve always loved white pumpkins which happens to pop nicely against the reclaimed wood! White pumpkin paradise here we come! Or teal, or peach.
You get to decide what kind of pumpkins will adorn your pumpkin patch sign simply by colour alone.
How to stencil to achieve crisp images with no paint bleed:
.
- Load the stencil brush with paint.
- Remove most paint on to a rag to achieve a dry-to-the-touch stencil brush.
- Tap or swirl paint through the stencil images to achieve the desired effect.

Splattered paint effect for a rustic touch
.
6. To further age the fall signs, gently flick black paint all over the signs to create a unique finish.
How to create a splatter paint effect on any sign
.
- Load stencil brush with lots of paint.
- Aim the brush towards your desired surface, then ‘flick’ the paint off the brush using a finger.
The Pumpkin Spice sign above shares how to achieve this effect on just stenciled letters rather than on the entire sign to give the lettering a pumpkin pie filling appearance!
This paint splattered technique really adds a little something to an otherwise plain sign!

Adding rustic twine to the signs
.
6. Tie some split up hemp rope around the left side of the sign for added rustic detail if desired!
Adding string or twine detailing to the ends of signs gives the sign some added texture as well as making it look as if the twine may have at one time hung up the original antique sign!
I personally used thicker hemp rope LIKE THIS that was divided up to achieve this look.
I was actually inspired to do this when I found a plank of wood in a pile of rubble with some twine twisted around it. I’ve added twine to many of my since ever since.

Then kinda fall in love with the finished sign…
… and made more than one, because they are that fun and easy to make, thanks to a few select fall stencils!
And that in itself is the beauty of stencils. It’s easy to repeat a design you love, so you can decorate more areas of your home, or gift them to another, or even sell.
And then it was time to play. Where oh where should I place these fall signs?!
I did think of the front porch surrounded with white pumpkins galore! However since I didn’t have any pumpkins on hand yet, I took a walk out to the backyard garden shed instead… which certainly did the outdoor fall decorating trick!

Tadaa! Oh little rustic shed, along with my collection of terra cotta plant pots, you certainly make these Pumpkin Patch signs shine!
Now if this little scene doesn’t give you a fall festival with tractor ride vibes, I don’t know what would.

I think my fall decorating is complete as-is! This shed resembles a little fall signs pop up shop that has a few items up for grabs!
That idea is a dream for one day. However today, the rustic garden shed continues to house my firewood.
But that sure doesn’t mean I can’t decorate the garden shed up for the season anyway!
How cute is one sign mounted to the front along the roofline?
I’m really digging the neutrain white pumpkins! Raw Silk was a great paint choice because it’s white without being too stark.
Orange pumpkins is a traditional standard of course and would look cute too! Now this is pumpkin decorating I can handle.
What’s your fav pumpkin tone these days?
Yup! These cute pumpkin patch signs look good anywhere.

It certainly helps that your photography and staging is super cute too!!
If you ever open up that little pop-up shop, I’ll be on the next plane with an empty suitcase for all the goodies I’ll be bringing home.
Love the rustic charm of your fall pumpkin patch signs and they look perfect staged against that awesome shed of yours. I like the paint splatter idea too.
